JAKARTA - Madonna's biopic that has been prepared for years has failed not because of the actors, but because of the budget war with Universal Pictures.

HuffPost quoted Monday, June 29, reported that Madonna revealed this in an interview with Interview Magazine while discussing her new album, Confessions II. The film was originally to be directed by herself and starring Julia Garner.

Madonna said she worked on the script for two years. She also spent two years at Universal Pictures with the production team to calculate the budget and choose the cast.

"We had a disagreement, me and Universal, about the budget," Madonna said. He felt his life story was too big to be made like a small-budget independent film.

"They couldn't understand it," Madonna said. He said he had tried to find ways to make the film cheaper in Serbia, but the studio was not interested.

Madonna also admitted to being surprised when Universal doubted her willingness to stay in Serbia for more than four days. He then questioned whether they had actually read the script.

After the project stalled, Netflix came up with another offer. The story of Madonna's life was proposed to be made as a series, not a cinema film.

According to HuffPost, the series plan also did not go smoothly. Madonna said she could not use the script that had been made with Universal unless she bought it back at a very expensive price, even though she wrote the script herself.

He then tried to understand how the series worked. The process is different. He has to meet many writers and find a showrunner, the person who leads the creative direction of the series production.

Madonna said the search had been going on for eight or nine months, but they had not found the right person.

Universal Pictures first announced the Madonna biopic project in 2020. Diablo Cody, the Oscar-winning writer, was involved as a co-writer. He was then replaced by Erin Cressida Wilson, the screenwriter of Secretary.

The project was eventually canceled in 2023 without explanation from the studio.

A number of actresses were mentioned to be in the running for the role of Madonna. Among them are Florence Pugh, Odessa Young, Emma Laird, Alexa Demie, and Julia Garner.

Last year, Garner told W Magazine that she would still play the "Queen of Pop" in the project that is still being developed.

The fate of the Madonna biopic is unclear. However, the story of the stalled project is said to appear in the latest season of the series The Studio.

According to Variety, Madonna will appear in two episodes of the Hollywood satire series produced by Apple TV. The story is said to be inspired by the failure of Madonna's biography film project and depicts the complexities of making a film in Hollywood today.

If true, it would be Madonna's first television role in more than two decades since appearing as a guest star on Will & Grace in 2003.
