JAKARTA - Actor Kim Mu Yeol responded to the controversy and criticism of the series Teach You A Lesson which was released on June 5. The series was adapted from the popular webtoon titled Get Schooled by Chae Yong Taek.
Teach You A Lesson tells the story of Na Hwa Jin (Kim Mu Yeol), a corporate employee who joins the Education Rights Protection Bureau established by the Minister of Education to solve various cases in the education environment. Na Hwa Jin is not afraid to do various things to uphold justice and the law.
In an interview, the 44-year-old actor admitted that he and the creator were always careful in making his series and executing his scenes.
"We make an effort to ensure that the series is not consumed as mere entertainment or cheap revenge fantasy," Kim Mu Yeol said, quoting the Korea Times.
"I hope the audience can see that the "corporate punishment" in this series is a narrative tool to encourage the characters to reflect on themselves and regret. We don't want the story to end with just the punishment stage, we try to focus on how these students change," he said.
Kim Mu Yeol explained, "This is a very complex problem that even experts and educators on the front lines are having trouble solving."
He believes that the creator of the series Teach You A Lesson can explain difficult problems with an easy look so that the audience can accept it. This is also seen with the final selection of the series which shows Na Hwa Jin facing her past.
"I feel that Hwa Jin's character arc reached its peak at that time, by finally choosing forgiveness and discipline over revenge," said Kim Mu Yeol.
The series Teach You A Lesson immediately ranked first globally on Netflix after its release. Actor Kim Mu Yeol was also the most talked about actor this week.
