JAKARTA - After being closed due to eruptive activity, good news came for climbers: the Semeru Mountain climbing route is now open again.

However, this opening is still accompanied by a number of restrictions and strict rules to maintain the safety of visitors, given the condition of the mountain which still needs to be watched.

The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) officially reopened the Semeru Mountain climbing route starting April 24, 2026, after it was previously closed since November 19, 2025. Head of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha, said this decision was taken through coordination with various parties.

"Activities on the Mount Semeru climbing route will be reopened starting April 24, 2026," said Rudijanta, as quoted by ANTARA, Thursday, April 23.

The policy is contained in an official letter from the TNBTS Headquarters which was issued on April 22, 2026. However, climbing is currently only allowed to the Ranu Kumbolo area, without access to the top of Mahameru.

To climb, prospective visitors are required to make an online ticket reservation through the official TNBTS website at least two days before departure. The quota that is opened is limited, namely 200 people per day with a climbing duration of two days and one night.

For climbers who have previously booked tickets in the period from November to December 2025, the management provides an option to reschedule so that they can still climb according to the latest regulations.

The manager also reminded the importance of complying with all standard operating procedures (SOP), including entering through the official route from Ranu Pani and completing the necessary administrative documents.

Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of the TNBTS Headquarters, Endrip Wahyutama, added that the use of local guides is now mandatory to prevent reckless climbers from heading to the peak area which is still at risk.

"That is an effort to anticipate climbers who go to the top," he said.

For information, the climbing route was previously closed due to the eruption that occurred in November 2025, which could potentially endanger the safety of climbers. With the reopening of this route, it is hoped that nature tourism activities can resume while still prioritizing safety aspects.
