JAKARTA - Cultural heritage is one of the important legacies that records the history and identity of the nation. From historic buildings, artifacts, to certain sites, they all hold irreplaceable value.
However, in the midst of various threats such as natural disasters, damage, and lack of data collection, efforts to protect cultural heritage are now becoming a serious concern for the government.
Minister of Culture Fadli Zon emphasized that his party was encouraging the acceleration of the registration of objects that fall into the category of cultural heritage in Indonesia. This step is considered important as part of mitigating the risk of potential damage due to disasters.
"Yes, first our data must be complete, yes, registered as I just said. The registration of our cultural heritage must be accelerated, it must be accelerated," said Fadli when met at the National Awakening Museum, Tuesday, April 14.
He added that the acceleration is targeted to be able to record more than a thousand collections, including various objects stored in the national museum.
"That's why I target more than a thousand, including the collections in the national museum," he said.
In its implementation, the priority of registration will include cultural heritage objects from repatriation and collections under the authority of the Cultural Preservation Agency in various regions. This includes important sites such as the tombs of national heroes that can be directly designated as cultural heritages.
"The tomb can immediately become a cultural heritage," he explained.
In addition, the collection belonging to national heroes and royal heritage is not considered to require a long study process, considering that the historical value has been well documented previously.
With the support of local governments and Cultural Preservation Centers throughout Indonesia, it is hoped that the number of cultural heritage registrations will increase significantly to reach thousands of objects.
Data-wise, there was a significant spike in the recording process. In the period 2024 to 2025, the number of records increased by 800 percent, from previously only 10 collections to 85 collections. Meanwhile, in 2026, there were 70 cultural heritage designations recorded and this figure is expected to continue to increase, given that the potential for cultural heritage objects in Indonesia reaches around 50 thousand.
Fadli emphasized that registration is an important foundation in future protection efforts, especially in the face of potential disasters.
"Well, how do we want to deal with it, for example, mitigating future disasters, the record is not there. Can with the record it is integrated with the study, what happened, what assets are there," concluded Fadli.
