JAKARTA - Historical books have an important role in recording the nation's journey as well as being a reference for current and future generations.
In the midst of technological developments, the presentation of historical books in digital format is considered to be able to expand public access to knowledge about Indonesia's long journey.
Minister of Culture Fadli Zon targets the book entitled "History of Indonesia: National Dynamics in Global Currents" to be accessible digitally and free of charge by the public starting in February, after it was officially launched in mid-December 2025.
"And of course there is a mediation process. So it takes a process of words, they say, about 1-2 months. Anyway, I target in February, if it can be accessed," said Fadli Zon in a media session in Jakarta.
According to Fadli Zon, the history book will not be printed in bulk. Cost considerations are the main reason, so printing is limited according to need.
"But, we will print it according to the needs for the national library, maybe the regional library, the library at several universities, we will print it. But if it is massive, no," he explained.
He said that the general public can access the history book for free through the official website of the Ministry of Culture, without having to buy the printed version.
In addition, Fadli Zon also revealed the Ministry of Culture's plan to facilitate the writing of thematic Indonesian history books. The themes to be raised include the history of the Majapahit Kingdom, the Sriwijaya Kingdom, the Samudra Pasai Kingdom, to the war to defend the independence of the Republic of Indonesia. The writing team for this series of thematic books is planned to be formed this month.
Previously, the Ministry of Culture had launched the book "History of Indonesia: National Dynamics in Global Currents" on Sunday, December 14, 2025, as part of efforts to care for the collective memory of the nation and strengthen national identity. The writing process for this book began in January 2025 and involved 123 historians and experts from 34 universities throughout Indonesia.
This book, consisting of 11 volumes, reviews the long journey of the Indonesian nation, starting from the roots of the Nusantara civilization, interaction with world civilizations such as India, China, Persia, the Middle East, and the West, the colonial period, the national movement, the struggle to defend independence, the consolidation of the state, the New Order era, to the reform and dynamics of Indonesian democracy until 2024.
