JAKARTA - The concept of green tourism (green tourism) is now a new direction in the development of the Indonesian tourism industry. This approach emphasizes the balance between economic growth, environmental conservation, and the welfare of local communities.

The government is trying to ensure that every tourist activity is not only economically attractive, but also contributes to the sustainability of nature and regional culture.

As part of this step, the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf) launched a new study entitled Tourism Snapshot Vol. 1 No. 2 of 2025, which focuses on strengthening the implementation of green tourism in Indonesia.

Assistant Deputy for Strategic Management of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, I Gusti Ayu Dewi Hendriyani, explained that the success of the transition to green tourism really depends on the quality of human resources (HR) that are competent and have sustainable skill standards.

"Preparation of human resources is the key to responding to the needs of the future tourism industry which is increasingly sustainability-oriented," he said in Jakarta, as quoted by ANTARA.

The Tourism Snapshot edition this time carries the theme Green Jobs, Green Skills, and Green Quality: Encouraging the Green Transition of the Tourism Sector by highlighting three main pillars: green jobs, green skills, and green quality. green quality).

In the green jobs section, this study examines opportunities and projections for environmentally friendly workers in the tourism sector. Meanwhile, green skills discuss the readiness of the curriculum, training, and competence of human resources in supporting the green economy. The green quality is focused on quality guarantees and tourism workforce certification to comply with global sustainability standards.

According to Dewi, the transition to green tourism is not only a national need, but also a global demand.

"This commitment is in line with the vision of international development partners who consider the green transition a must," he said. He added that changes in the behavior of world tourists are now also increasingly leading to environmentally friendly and sustainable destinations.

As a follow-up, the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy for the 2022 period of 2023 has compiled 34 national competency standards in the tourism sector, including the Indonesian National Work Competency Standard (SKKNI), the Indonesian National Qualification Framework (KKNI), as well as an occupancy scheme that instills sustainability values.

The government is also preparing harmonization of tourism standards at the ASEAN and global levels, including updating the community-based tourism curriculum (CBT) and developing certification for strategic managerial level workers.

Dewi added that the International Labor Organization (ILO) considers that the green transition will open up jobs that are not only beneficial to the community, but also to the environment and the economy. Therefore, collaboration between governments, educational institutions, and industry players needs to be strengthened to accelerate the adoption of sustainable practice.

Through policy support, improving green skills, and standard competency certification, it is hoped that Indonesia's green tourism can grow more inclusively, provide economic benefits for the community, as well as preserve nature for future generations.
