JAKARTA - Inmates at the Class IIA Banyuwangi Correctional Institution (Lapas), East Java, showed proud coaching results through written batik works with the distinctive pattern "grain."

The batik is now the target of the East Java Correctional Mothers Association (PIPAS), which ordered large quantities for the needs of organizational uniforms.

The head of Banyuwangi Prison, I Wayan Nurasta Wibawa, said that so far hundreds of batik cloth have been produced by the work of the inmates' hands.

"We have distributed a total of 688 batik fabrics to a number of Correctional Technical Implementation Units in the East Java region," he explained as quoted by ANTARA.

According to Wayan, the high interest in batik bars reflects a real appreciation for the work and perseverance of the inmates.

He added that the trust from the East Java PIPAS also shows that the skills training program carried out in prisons really has a positive impact.

"This message will be used in routine PIPAS activities. We also adjust the design of batik motifs to local cultural values and uniqueness of East Java," he added.

The batik motif was previously known as jajah oling terjalin, and is now a characteristic of batik production in Banyuwangi Prison. Although made by inmates, the quality of batik is claimed to be able to compete with the work of professional craftsmen.

Our inmates have received intensive training from batik experts. With that provision, they are able to produce products with high economic value," Wayan said.

More than just works of art, this batik training is also part of the coaching process which aims to equip inmates with life skills. The hope is that after they are free, they will be independent and have income through these skills.

"It's not just about batik, but about the future. We want them to be able to return to society with skills and self-confidence," Wayan concluded.
