People's Schools, 24 Hours Initiative To Build Children's Characters For Poor Families

JAKARTA - People's Schools are a form of educational innovation that combines academic aspects, character formation, nutrition improvement, and psychosocial assistance in a system that runs for 24 hours.

This model is designed to provide equal learning opportunities for children from prosperous families with a more humane and comprehensive approach.

The Ministry of Social Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia is currently perfecting the concept of a boarding school, which focuses not only on academic achievements, but also on holistically fostering children's personality and welfare. Deputy Minister of Social Affairs, Agus Jabo Priyono, emphasized that this system will combine formal education with character strengthening and life skills activities.

"People's schooling is not only a place to study, but also a second home for children. They will be cared for, fostered, and accompanied by Pamong and foster guardians who are present for 24 hours. The focus is to establish confidence, improve nutritional conditions, and heal inner wounds that they may have brought from the past," Agus said after closing the first stage of the People's School Head Retret at the Arhanud 1/Faletehan Regiment Headquarters, as quoted by ANTARA.

During the day, students will follow lessons according to the national curriculum. Afternoon to evening it is used for extracurricular activities and systematically designed character development. This concept was jointly worked on by the Ministry of Social Affairs, the Ministry of Education, as well as a team of program developers with an inclusive and adaptive approach to the needs of children from difficult backgrounds.

These children come with various stories and challenges. So, school principals and teachers must have high sensitivity, not only about academics, but also empathy and deep commitment," said Agus.

Furthermore, he emphasized that the People's School will focus on three main pillars: mastery of science, formation of national and religious characters, as well as practical skills that can support children's independence in the future. To make this happen, teachers will be provided with special training before entering the field.

Agus also expressed his hope that collaboration with various parties, both the government, educational institutions, and civil society can strengthen the quality of teachers and educators in this program.

"We cannot walk alone. We must embrace all parties who care about the future of the nation's children," he said.

With this approach, the People's School is expected to be an important milestone in efforts to break the chain of poverty and score young people who are not only intelligent but also mentally, socially and spiritually resilient.
