JAKARTA - Eye masks or under eye patches are one of the popular skin care products because they are believed to be able to provide refreshing effects and beautify the under-eye area.

Its function is, among other things, to reduce the appearance of moisturizing eyes, brighten dull skin, and provide moisture so that the skin around the eyes looks more subtle and maintained.

However, according to dermatologist Dr. Jushya Bhatia Sarin, eye masks do not always provide significant changes to the biological condition of the skin.

In his personal Instagram upload, he likens eye masks to a cup of coffee for eyes that are tired of being effective in providing a temporary boost, but not fixing the root of skin problems.

"Undereye masks can provide fresh effects, but do not immediately correct signs of aging such as fine lines or wrinkles that arise due to natural biological processes," he explained, as reported by the Hindustan Times.

Even so, Sarin still shares a number of tips so that the use of eye masks can provide maximum results, depending on the active content.

For example, masks that contain hyaluronic acid and other moisturizing ingredients are suitable for softening and maintaining the elasticity of the under-eye skin. The focus, he said, is not removing wrinkles, but maintaining skin hydration.

In addition, masks containing vitamin C are useful for helping to lighten dull skin lightly. Meanwhile, products that contain caffeine can help deflate the swollen eye, especially if it is cooled before use.

He also reminded users to be careful in choosing the content of active materials. The skin area around the eyes is very sensitive, so it is better to avoid materials such as retinol or strong acid that have the potential to cause irritation.

"Use eye masks as a complement to eye cream, not as a substitute. Its function is more support, not the main solution," said Sarin.
