JAKARTA- Fog causes your visibility to be reduced when driving. Certainly too risky if forced to continue the journey because it is prone to accidents. For that, driving in foggy areas requires special tips and tricks so that you can safely reach your destination.

Start the morning journey

It is highly recommended that you travel in places that are notoriously foggy, such as mountainous areas, in the early morning. Because the fog usually falls more often in the afternoon.

Don't forget to pull over

When you are driving and going down a thick fog, pull over first to the rest area or minimarket until the fog clears. The time it takes is only about one to two hours. If the fog hasn't gone away, stay at the nearest inn and continue the trip the next day.

Drive slowly

Driving along a foggy road is very dangerous. Especially if you don't really understand the terrain to be taken. We recommend that you reduce the speed below 50 km / hour. If the fog is too thick, reduce the speed again to 40 km / h and be alert at all times. This is to avoid sudden brakes due to unclear vision.

Turn on the vehicle lights

Turning on the lights is mandatory if you are driving in a foggy area. The vehicle lights will be a marker for other vehicles around you. Better yet, if the vehicle is equipped with fog lamps.

Apart from being a light, fog lamps also help you see the trajectory more clearly, such as mounds of earth, bumpy roads, and potholes. Don't forget to turn off the lights when the fog has cleared because it will dazzle other drivers.

Turn off the music and turn on the air conditioner

Focus and concentration is needed when driving in foggy areas. Please turn off any sound sources in the car that could distract from the focus so that you are more aware of the surrounding sound.

That way, even though visibility is reduced, you can still hear vehicles and other road users who can't be seen from a distance. Also, turn on the air conditioner to avoid condensation on the windshield.

As a precaution, if it is not possible to continue to run the air conditioner, spray anti-frost liquid (commonly called anti-fog liquid) which is currently sold in many supply stores or auto repair shops.

This liquid active ingredient will prevent condensation by absorbing the liquid that sticks to the glass.

Maintain a distance

To prevent accidents if you have to stop suddenly, try to adjust the distance between your vehicle and other vehicles in front. Leave a minimum distance of 30-50 m with the car in front of you. If the car is on an incline, make the distance more than 50 m.

Avoid changing lanes

Avoid changing lanes when driving in foggy areas. Changing lanes in conditions of limited visibility is potentially dangerous.
