5 Easy Ways To Clean Canvas-Based Sneakers

Clean mud stains

Dealing with muddy sneakers? Wait for it to dry before cleaning. You can remove loose dirt by slapping your sneakers against the pavement or by tapping the soles of your shoes against a trash can or floor with newspaper. Wipe the sneakers with a damp cloth to remove any remaining dirt, then remove the laces.

Use a toothbrush and nylon cloth

If you're trying to get rid of visible scuff marks, start by rinsing your shoes in warm water inside and out. Then scrub the outside, inside, and lining of the canvas shoes gently using a toothbrush and a mixture of water and a mild detergent.

Next, rinse with cold water. If you still see stubborn marks, you can gently scrub them off with a nylon pad while rinsing. And if you still smell feet, you can scrub it with a paste of baking soda and water.

White sneakers can be cleaned using water and bleach, in a 1:5 ratio. For colored sneakers, be sure to do a small spot test first to make sure it doesn't fade or bleach the color. If your shoe has leather details, wet the shoe and clean the canvas as directed, then apply a leather cleaner to any leather area.

Clean the rope by washing

Dirty laces will stand out in stark contrast to your freshly cleaned sneakers. You can wash shoelaces as usual like washing clothes. To make it even cleaner, you can soak the shoelaces in a detergent water bath for 15 minutes before washing. If the stain doesn't go away, use a toothbrush to clean stubborn stains.

Fill the inside of the sneakers with paper

When you're done washing the sneakers, drain the excess water. Then, to help absorb the extra moisture and maintain its shape, fill it with a crumpled brown paper bag, paper towel, or white paper. Do not use newspapers or colored paper as the ink will transfer and stain the shoes.

Next, set the sneakers aside to air dry, and make sure not to dry them near a fireplace or heater. Direct heat sources can damage the canvas and cause it to dry out and become brittle.

Use shoe polish on stubborn stains

If your shoes are dry and you still see some stains, try applying a special white shoe polish. It is recommended to spray the tops of new canvas shoes with a cloth before you put them on. But first, take a peek at the care instructions that came with the sneakers to make sure these don't damage them.
