JAKARTA - As a young director and just debuted with the work Kukira Kau Rumah, Umay Shahab did not expect his film to be warmly welcomed by the audience. The film, starring Prilly Latuconsina, has reached one million viewers in just 4.5 days in theaters.
Umay admitted that he did not believe in this achievement. Standing up to tears of emotion was his response when he saw that number.
"The first one is definitely happy, very happy. I suddenly cried. When I saw the numbers I didn't cry immediately, I was stunned for a moment, then I cried loudly," he said during a virtual conversation, Wednesday, February 9.

When filming Kukira Kau Rumah in 2019, Umay Shahab was only 19 years old. It is not an easy matter but also not something difficult to do when there is an intention to learn and is supported by a supportive environment.
"I believe in becoming a director because the people around me are kind. I'm a privileged director. I didn't go through college like other directors, I didn't start from the crew from the smallest line. I didn't go through a long enough phase. I played and got the opportunity to be direct, " he said.
Having a golden opportunity, Umay doesn't want to be complacent. He learns and is not lazy to absorb knowledge from experienced people.
"Thank God I used the privileges I had to study with Monti Tiwa. Met Prilly I learned. There was Andy Rianto, I also studied," he recalled.
"Why did I dare to take this step? Because I believe that the people around me will help me. That's why there was the film I thought you were the house, so with all the distractions of a 19-year-old boy who was just learning to make films," he added.
Claiming to be sotoy aka know-it-all, Umay accepts all the criticisms he receives gracefully. For him, it's all a form of love that wants him to develop better.
"There are many things that make me feel stupid and ignorant. It's like the open ending in this film has two poles. Some people really like it, some don't understand. Some viewers have question marks, that's a form of my stupidity," he said.
Because of that, Umay continued to study. His first step as a director continued to become a serial director.
"I will not stop. After this I directed the series Today Why Naira? I continue my path to become a director. Actually I want to continue in the art world. With any medium I want to learn. musical. I want to be a theater director, why not?" sure.
"Just learn, I want to try something new. Art is in my area. Whatever the medium, I will definitely brush it up," he said.
What makes Umay feel proud is that one of her dreams has been achieved. "One of my dreams has been achieved, this Indonesian film will become king in its own land. Alhamdulillah, finally you. Umay Shahab believes that Indonesia has a lot of potential for young people who excel. They just need to be given the opportunity and belief.

"When I am 31 years old, I hope there will be another 19-year-old child who will make his first film. I hope that the community will be more supportive," he said.
