JAKARTA - In order to commemorate World Cancer Day (WCD) 2026, attention to cancer control efforts is strengthening again in various health sectors.
This annual momentum serves as a reminder that cancer is not only a medical issue, but a shared challenge that requires cross-disciplinary collaboration and patient-friendly policies.
In line with this spirit, the Indonesian Oncology Association (PP POI) has emphasized its commitment to strengthening cooperation between various stakeholders to encourage more optimal and equitable cancer services in Indonesia.
Carrying the global theme "United by Unique: United in Uniqueness for Equitable Cancer Services", the PP POI highlights the importance of an inclusive approach to cancer treatment that is oriented towards the needs of each individual.
The Chairman of the PP POI, Dr. Cosphiadi Irawan, Sp.PD-KHOM, said that the theme reflects the clinical reality in the field. According to him, no two cancer patients actually have the same conditions, disease journey, or challenges.
"The theme of United by Unique describes that each patient has a different journey in dealing with cancer, with diverse needs, obstacles, and challenges," said Cosphiadi.
However, he emphasized that the differences should be united in one system of fair, quality, and sustainable services. "All stakeholders need to work together so that cancer services can be accessed equally by all patients," he added.
As a tangible manifestation of this commitment, PP POI held a Cancer Patient Sarasehan which brought together various parties, ranging from representatives of the Indonesian Ministry of Health, heads of national and private referral hospitals, to the cancer patient community.
This forum is an open dialogue space to discuss various strategic issues in the national cancer service system. A number of emerging key topics include equitable access to services so that they are not concentrated in large cities, patient care continuity, and strengthening multidisciplinary teamwork between medical specialties to improve clinical outcomes.
In addition, the role of patients is also emphasized as an important element in the health service ecosystem, not just as service recipients, but as subjects who have a voice and rights in the treatment process.
Strategic Commitment of POIAs a professional organization that oversees oncology specialists, POI has a strategic role in the preparation of the National Guidelines for Medical Services (PNPK) and advocacy for health policies that are patient-oriented.
POI realizes that the challenge of controlling cancer in Indonesia cannot be handled by medical personnel alone. Synergy is needed between the government, health service facilities, patient communities, and the wider community.
Through the World Cancer Day 2026 commemoration, PP POI invites all elements of the nation to strengthen the national cancer service network. Hopefully, every cancer patient in Indonesia can get services that are equal, quality, and in accordance with national and international standards.
