JAKARTA - Access to clean water and the implementation of healthy living behaviors are two important factors in improving the quality of life of the community. Unfortunately, many areas in Indonesia still have limited access to clean water, especially hilly areas that are difficult to store rainwater.
This condition requires a coordinated effort between the government, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector to create a healthy environment through education on clean living behavior and the provision of sustainable clean water facilities.
One effective approach is through the implementation of the 5 pillars of STBM (Total Community-Based Sanitation) which encourages people to adopt clean and healthy living behaviors (PHBS) in their daily lives.
In an effort to realize this, Kao Indonesia together with Kao Life-in-Harmony Foundation (Kao LIHF) and PT Gama Inovasi Berdikari (GIB) have strengthened collaboration through the RAIN Program (God's Mercy for Indonesia) Harmony 2.0.
This program aims to provide access to clean water in Girimulyo Village, Yogyakarta, as well as educating the community about PHBS based on the 5 pillars of STBM. This time, the program presents an additional 18 GAMA-Rain Filter (GRF) points to complement the existing facilities.
This activity was held on December 17, 2025 with the presence of various parties, including the Head of the Gunungkidul Environmental Service, Panewu Panggang, Girimulyo Lurah, representatives of the DIY Provincial Health Service and Gunungkidul Regency, as well as teams from Kao LIHF and PT GIB.
Local residents and village heads were also present, showing their enthusiasm for this program which focuses on the availability of clean water and sanitation education.
The RAIN Harmony 2.0 program continues the steps that have been taken in 2024, when the first 7 GRF points were installed. With the addition of 18 new points, the total GRF facility now has 25 points that are expected to meet the needs of clean water for 1,223 people, 81 families, and 21 communities.
In addition to installation, this program also provides education related to clean and healthy living behavior as part of the priority program of the Directorate of Environmental Health, Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia.
"We appreciate the collaboration of all parties in this activity. Efforts to provide water and strengthen PHBS must go hand in hand with the implementation of the 5 pillars of STBM," said Dr. dr. Then Suyanti, M.M., Director of Environmental Health, Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia from the official statement of KAO Indonesia.
"Cross-sectoral collaboration like this is very important to accelerate the achievement of sustainable public health and the environment to improve the quality of life of the community, especially in Girimulyo, Yogyakarta which is geographically challenged in the availability of water sources," he continued.
This program is also part of ESG's commitment to realize Kirei Lifestyle, where people can live cleaner and healthier with a sense of security in a sustainable environment.
Girimulyo village, which is located in a karst hilly area, has limited surface water so it requires an innovative solution. During the dry season, residents' wells often dry up, so people have to rely on the government's clean water dropping assistance or buying it independently.
"Kao Life-in-Harmony Foundation this time has strengthened collaboration by adding 18 GRF points, so that a total of 25 GRF facilities are expected to provide benefits to 1,223 people to support daily sanitation together with PT Gama Inovasi Berdikari (GIB)," explained Yumi Takeuchi, President of Kao Life-in-Harmony Foundation.
"This is also more complete because of the support from Kao Indonesia in the form of education to increase awareness of PHBS in everyday life as well as the support of the central government such as the Ministry of Health to the local Health Office. Hopefully this program can continue and make Girimulyo Village a pilot for Rain Water Harvesting Villages in the future," he added.
In addition to the inauguration of the GRF facility, this activity also involved an educational session held together with the Panggang II Health Center. The material includes socialization of the 5 pillars of STBM, hand washing with soap, and distribution of hygiene and sanitation support products so that residents can implement PHBS properly.
"This continued collaboration is in line with the company's ESG strategy, namely Kirei Lifestyle Innovation, where we strive to provide added value to the community through various efforts that are relevant to the problems faced and the needs of the Indonesian people," said Wisik Restu, Director of PT Kao Indonesia.
"We are proud to take part in this continued cross-sector collaboration which is a manifestation of real joint contributions. We hope that what is done today will be a driving force for the community to play a role in maintaining and caring for the facilities that have been provided and implementing PHBS in the daily lives of the Girimulyo community," he continued.
GAMA-Rain Filter (GRF), developed by PT GIB, is an innovation in rainwater treatment technology that is designed to be easy to use, maintain, and produce safe clean water.
"For PT Gama Inovasi Berdikari (GIB), GRF technology is an approach to an efficient, easy-to-use, and customized rainwater treatment solution. And this year we are continuing to develop the program to strengthen the use of this technology in 18 additional points supported by Kao LIHF," said Ridha Nurul Azizah, Director of PT GIB.
"Through this activity, we want to ensure that the public can easily access clean water for daily needs while understanding the importance of hygiene and sanitation as part of optimal clean water utilization," he continued.
The Girimulyo Village Government emphasized the importance of the sustainability of this program so that the benefits can continue to be felt by the residents.
"As a party who directly sees changes in the community, the Girimulyo Village Government expresses its appreciation for this continued collaboration," said Drs. Sunu Raharjo as the Girimulyo Village Head.
"The previous program has provided real benefits, ranging from the availability of access to clean water to increasing public awareness of PBHS. With the implementation of today's activities, the village government hopes that this positive impact can be further entrenched and reach more residents," he continued.
With the strengthening of cross-sectoral synergy, the RAIN Harmony program is expected to have a long-term impact on the Girimulyo community. This initiative not only meets the basic needs of clean water, but also encourages more independent and conscious healthy behavior changes.
Wisik Restu closed with the statement, "We believe that sustainable change can only be created when companies, communities, and various stakeholders move together. Through the continuation of this RAIN Harmony program collaboration, we hope that the value of Kirei Lifestyle can continue to be implemented and provide real benefits to the community, while strengthening our commitment to bringing a cleaner, healthier, and sustainable life for all."
