JAKARTA - The habit of drinking coffee, especially trendy coffee with added sugar or toppings, is now increasingly popular among young people. A trend that has become part of everyday life makes the consumption of sweet drinks increasingly increasing.

This condition can potentially trigger metabolic disorders, including diabetes, which is now also starting to be found at a young age. The reason is, one glass of trendy coffee is enough for 50 percent of daily sugar needs.

When the drink is consumed more than one glass per day, especially when combined with snacks or other sweet foods, the body's sugar needs can be excessive. When sugar intake continues to be excessive, the body will experience insulin resistance, which is a condition when the body's cells no longer respond optimally to insulin hormones.

As a result, blood sugar levels increase and in the long term can develop into type 2 diabetes.

At least this fact was conveyed by the General Chair of PB PERKENI (Indonesian Endocrinology Association), Prof. Dr. Em Yunir, SpPD, K-EMD, FINASIM.

Prof Yunir, his nickname, revealed that type 2 diabetes cases have even been found at a very young age.

"There is already a type 2 diabetes patient who is 18 years old. One of the triggers for this condition is the habit of consuming excessive sweet foods and drinks, including trendy coffee that is high in sugar," said Prof. Yunir in a media discussion "Kalbe Supports Strategic Collaboration in Managing Diabetes in Indonesia" in Jakarta, Friday, April 17.

This phenomenon shows that diabetes is no longer synonymous with old age. In the younger age group, modern lifestyles such as excessive sugar consumption, lack of physical activity, and the habit of sitting for a long time contribute greatly to the increased risk of this disease.

The same thing was also conveyed by the Director of Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (P2PTM) of the Ministry of Health, Siti Nadia Tarmizi. He emphasized that the type of coffee consumed has a great influence on daily sugar intake.

"Coffee that doesn't have sugar like black coffee, it's healthier for the heart. But, the current coffee that has a lot of additions, it has a lot of sugar," he explained.

Therefore, the public is urged to be more wise in consuming sweet foods and drinks, including coffee. Controlling sugar intake is an important step to prevent the risk of chronic diseases in the future.

As the number of diabetes cases in Indonesia increases, various parties also encourage more integrated treatment efforts. One of them is through collaboration between the government, health workers, industry, and the community to strengthen education and prevention.

PT Kalbe Farma Tbk (Kalbe) also supports this strategic collaboration in managing diabetes in Indonesia, in line with the increasing prevalence of diabetes which reached 10.9 percent based on the Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) 2018 data. The approach taken is not only focused on treatment, but also education and prevention on an ongoing basis.

This effort is also in line with Law Number 17 of 2023 concerning Health which emphasizes the importance of collaboration in controlling non-communicable diseases.

"We consistently support the expansion of health access, increased independence and health resilience in Indonesia. Diabetes management cannot be done by one party alone. Synergy is needed between the government, health workers, industry, and society. For this reason, we continue to strengthen collaboration with various stakeholders," said Director of PT Kalbe Farma Tbk, Mulialie.

Through increased awareness and cooperation from various parties, it is hoped that the public will better understand the importance of maintaining consumption patterns, including in enjoying coffee, so that they remain healthy without having to abandon the lifestyle they live.
