Symptoms of Miom and Cysts that Women Often Ignore, Here's the Difference

TANGERANG - Miom and cysts are two women's reproductive health problems that are quite common, but the symptoms are often not realized from the beginning. In fact, if the size is enlarged, both can interfere with activities, reduce quality of life, and affect fertility.

Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Eka Hospital BSD, dr. Budi Santoso, Sp.OG, FMAS, explained that many patients come when the condition has caused severe complaints.

"Miom and cysts are often asymptomatic at first. Patients only realize it after severe pain, abnormal bleeding, or a swollen stomach," said Dr. Budi when meeting the media in the South Tangerang area, Tuesday, January 27, 2026.

What's the Difference Between Miom and Cysts?

Although often considered the same, myom and cysts are different conditions.

Miom (uterine fibroids) are growths of muscle tissue in the uterine wall, generally benign. Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that most often form in the ovaries (ovary).

"Miom has the shape of a benign tumor from the uterine muscle tissue, while the cyst is more in the form of a fluid bag, usually in the ovary," explained dr. Budi.

Symptoms of Miom that Need to Be Wary of

Miom tends to cause more obvious symptoms, especially if it is large:

Bleeding outside the menstrual period. Severe pain or cramps during menstruation. The lower abdomen appears enlarged or feels full. Frequent urination due to a depressed bladder. Pain during intercourse. Lower back pain. Constipation or a feeling of pressure in the anal area.

Symptoms of Ovarian Cysts that are Often Considered Minor

Cysts are often milder, but still need attention:

Pelvic or lower back pain Feeling full or heavy in the lower abdomen (often one side) Pain during menstruation Pain during sexual intercourse Irregular menstrual cycles Dizziness or constipation
