Urine Characteristics Signifying Kidney Problems

JAKARTA - Urine is something you can pay attention to to identify hidden health problems in the body. Although it may seem normal, changes in urine can be a sign of a serious health problem.

As reported by the Daily Mail on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, foamy urine can be a sign of kidney problems. Foamy urine can be a sign of glomerulonephritis, damage to the tiny filters in the kidneys caused by the immune system attacking healthy body tissue.

"If you see persistent bubbles even though you've drunk enough water, immediately check your urine for protein levels," says functional nutritionist and health coach, Dr. Reshmi Verma.

Another sign of kidney problems that can be seen in urine is the presence of small grains of sand. This could indicate kidney stones.

In patients with kidney stones, blood in the urine is usually accompanied by severe pain in the waist and back. This pain occurs when the kidney stones become too large and block the ducts.

Furthermore, the color of urine can also indicate kidney problems, such as pink or red. A strong odor in urine can also indicate an infection or kidney stones.

"Pink or red urine can indicate kidney disease or conditions affecting other parts of your urinary tract," concludes Patrick Cunningham, MD, a nephrologist at the University of Chicago Medicine.
