Ensure Safe Electricity Supply, PLN Says Peak Electricity Load During Indonesian Independence Day Reaches 42.6 GW

DEPOK - PT PLN (Persero) projects that the peak electricity load on August 17, 2026, nationwide will reach 42.6 gigawatt (GW). Meanwhile, the power generating capacity reaches 51.6 GW, so that there is sufficient power reserve of 9 GW or about 21.1 percent.

"Currently, all PLN units are in full alert status. More than 45,000 of our personnel are deployed in 2,275 alert points throughout Indonesia. All are moving and all are focused," said PLN President Director, Darmawan Prasodjo to the media, Sunday, August 16.

Darmawan said that the readiness was strengthened with 1,517 units of generators, 559 units of Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), and 1,286 units of mobile substations as a backup power supply. To speed up handling at the location, PLN also activated 75 units of mobile cables, 318 units of crane trucks, 3,424 operational cars, and 3,583 operational motorcycles.

"All resources are prepared thoroughly at various points. Especially for the series of activities at the Presidential Palace, PLN has prepared a layered electrical security system up to five levels, which includes the plant, transformer, digital Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, UPS, to the generator," he added.

Darmawan emphasized that PLN's readiness is not only focused on the momentum of the 81st anniversary of the Indonesian Independence, but also includes a rapid response to electricity conditions in various regions. One of them, the Kalimantan electricity system, which had previously experienced disturbances on the generator side, has now been gradually recovered.

"For the Kalimantan system, which had experienced a power plant disruption, today has gradually recovered. There is an additional supply from two power plants so that the Kalimantan system is getting stronger and better, we will continue to control," said Darmawan.

On the other hand, PLN is also moving quickly to recover after the earthquake that occurred in Flores, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). As soon as the earthquake occurred, PLN officers were immediately deployed to conduct inspections and repairs on the affected electrical infrastructure.

"As soon as the earthquake occurred in Flores, NTT, the PLN team immediately moved. It didn't wait. What could be immediately repaired, both the main switchyard, distribution network, and other facilities, we immediately worked on. We continue to pursue recovery. Thank God, this afternoon 11 main switchyards that were affected were back in voltage, then the normalization process was carried out gradually to the customer," said Darmawan.

In the recovery process, PLN coordinates closely with the local government, the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the TNI, and the National Police. A number of locations are still facing access problems due to post-earthquake conditions, but PLN is trying to continue recovery by prioritizing the safety of officers and the community.
