11 KKP Polytechnic Melted into the Indonesian Maritime Institute to Match Industry Development

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) merged 11 polytechnics into one container called the Indonesian Ocean Institute (IKI) or the Ocean Institute of Indonesia (OII).

The unification step was marked by the issuance of two Ministerial Regulations on Marine and Fisheries (Kepmen KP) Number 50 and Number 51 of 2026.

Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KP) Sakti Wahyu Trenggono said that the idea of unifying vocational education under the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries has been going on for quite some time.

He admitted that he had visited all vocational campuses spread across several regions of Indonesia, including its education system and facilities.

From there, Trenggono said, the facilities used were outdated. Therefore, he wanted to overhaul the education system at these eleven polytechnic campuses to be in line with industrial development.

"I want this to be unified, completely changed, starting from the educational curriculum to the ultimate goal. Because I will see the measures of its success," said Trenggono as quoted from a written statement, Thursday, July 23.

Trenggono said that later there will be special specifications at each campus, such as specifications in the field of fishing, fish farming on different campuses, and fish processing on other campuses.

"So, each campus does not teach these fields equally, but varies according to their specifications," he said.

In addition to being experts in their fields, Trenggono said, students at vocational campuses under the auspices of the Ministry of Manpower must also be equipped with science. For this reason, he asked for cooperation with universities, such as ITB, Undip to IPB.

"For example, seaweed cultivation has been around for decades since Indonesia is independent. There are already 11 polytechnics like that. It should be extraordinary, but our cultivation method is still very traditional. This is what should be done by working with higher education, the head of BRIN, of course, then supporting industries will be born," he said.

Meanwhile, Head of the Marine and Fisheries Human Resources Development and Extension Agency (BPPSDM KP) I Nyoman Radiarta said that 11 higher education units which are now united into OII, implement industry-based vocational learning with 100 percent students from marine and fisheries business actors.

"Since its inception to date, education units under the KKP have graduated 27,819 people with the absorption of graduates mostly working in the business and industrial world," he explained.
