JAKARTA - PT Aviasi Pariwisata Indonesia (Persero) or InJourney said the Mandalika MotoGP event not only boosted economic growth, but also improved the quality of human resources (HR) in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB).

InJourney's President Director Maya Watono said, looking back at last year's MotoGP event, it was recorded that the turnover of money was around Rp. 4.9 trillion. This figure has been recognized by the Ministry of National Development Planning (PPN/Bappenas).

In addition to encouraging the growth of the tourism and investment sectors, the world motorcycle racing event also contributes to improving the quality of local human resources (HR).

"We talked about the economic impact, the sustainable economic impact of MotoGP was Rp. 4.9 trillion, which is extraordinary, and also the absorption of local labor, then the increase in human capital," said Maya in the Press Conference and Launching Ceremony for the Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia 2026, Thursday, June 18.

Maya said that at the first MotoGP in 2022, all marshals were still brought in by the international organizer, Dorna Sports, now all marshals in charge are from the people of NTB. In fact, continued Maya, the quality of marshals from NTB has now been recognized internationally.

"What is extraordinary, we are starting to export our marshals to Japan and Malaysia. So actually our human resources are very extraordinary and we can improve them not only for Indonesia, but also internationally," he said.

In addition, Maya assessed that MotoGP is also an effective means of promoting Indonesia on the world stage. According to him, the event was watched in more than 200 countries with a reach of around 670 million viewers.

"Now we not only have nation branding, but also nation pride. The world knows Mandalika and Indonesia from the MotoGP event, and now we have local heroes who are a common pride," he said.

Maya said that the development of Mandalika as a world-class tourist destination requires a process that is not short. According to him, the progress achieved today is the result of development that has taken place over the past five years.

"Five years does not feel like we have got here, but maybe we need another five years to make this destination, a world-class destination. And the impact of MotoGP for the Mandalika region and NTB as a whole, it is very extraordinary," he said.

Meanwhile, Minister of Youth and Sports Erick Thohir said MotoGP is part of the government's strategy in developing sport tourism and the sports industry which has a very large growth prospect.

According to Erick, the global market value of sports tourism currently reaches around 625 billion US dollars and is expected to increase to 2.7 trillion US dollars in the coming years. The world sports industry is worth more than 500 billion US dollars with growth of around 8 percent per year.

"This means that I hope that the audience growth has been proven, the economic impact has been proven. Creating talent has been proven, so how can we all here continue to improve, improve so that events like MotoGP can really continue to be successful," said Erick.

According to Erick, the magnitude of the economic turnover of the MotoGP in Mandalika, can be seen clearly from Singapore which has started to hold the Formula 1 car race on the same date, namely 9 to 11 October 2026.

For information, InJourney will again hold the Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia 2026 at the Pertamina International Circuit Mandalika, Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, in October. The race is the 18th series in the 2026 MotoGP calendar before continuing to the Australian GP at Phillip Island.

"The proof is that neighboring countries are starting to be disturbed, the name of F1 is the date of the game. This means that I hope that the growth of the audience has been proven, the economic impact has been proven, now how can we all continue to improve so that this MotoGP event can be successful," said Erick.

On the other hand, Deputy Governor of NTB Indah Dhamayanti Putri said that MotoGP has become a magnet for the tourism and investment sectors in her area. According to him, every MotoGP event has an impact on increasing hotel occupancy rates, adding flights, to people's economic activities.

Furthermore, Indah also said that more than 600 local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) were involved in every MotoGP event in Mandalika.

"We want Mandalika to belong to Indonesia, so that the sense of ownership to make this event successful does not only belong to the people of West Nusa Tenggara, but to the people of Indonesia, because we are lucky to be one of the countries that can host the MotoGP event," he said.
