JAKARTA - Saudi Arabia's decision to resume imports of Lebanese products not only has economic significance but also an important political meaning for Lebanon and is seen as a signal of support, said Lebanese Economy Minister Amer Bisat.
"This decision reflects two things. Beyond the economic impact, this decision has a very important political significance. The idea that Lebanon has been marginalized from the Arab world is unacceptable," Bisat told RIA Novosti, quoted by Antara, Saturday.
"This decision could mark the beginning of Lebanon's return to the Arab economic space and open new opportunities for Lebanese producers," he added.
Previously on Thursday (11/6), Saudi Arabia announced the lifting of restrictions on imports from Lebanon which have been in place since April 2021.
Riyadh said the decision was made after consultations with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and in light of steps taken by Beirut to tighten export controls and combat smuggling.
Prior to the restrictions, Gulf countries accounted for about 45 percent of Lebanon's agricultural exports, with Saudi Arabia remaining one of the largest markets for Lebanese producers.
