Purbaya Gets Information from Sellers Knowing Tempe Has Been Eroded by Profits due to Rupiah Weakening

JAKARTA - Minister of Finance (Menkeu) Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has received information that traders know that tempe in the country has eroded its profits because the rupiah exchange rate continues to fall against the US dollar.

Purbaya revealed that business actors know and tempe are currently facing pressure due to the increase in the cost of imported raw materials.

"I hear that tempe sellers, sellers know that their profits have been eroded or are forced to raise prices because the ingredients are still imported," said Purbaya at a press conference at the DPR building, Senayan, Jakarta, Saturday, June 6.

According to him, the weakening of the rupiah can increase the production costs of entrepreneurs who are still dependent on imported raw materials.

"What is clear is that it will increase their cost of production," he said.

Therefore, he ensured that the stability of the rupiah exchange rate was one of the government's focuses because it had a direct impact on the cost of living of the community and small business actors.

According to Purbaya, the government will strengthen coordination of fiscal and monetary policies with Bank Indonesia (BI) in order to maintain the rupiah exchange rate.

"We will increase coordination with the central bank," he said.

With closer coordination, the government believes it will be able to maintain the stability of the rupiah exchange rate in the future.

"We will support the central bank to strengthen coordination so that policies are more synchronized. So that the impact of policies between monetary and fiscal policies is also more significant to the economy," he said.

"Of course, if the policy is fully integrated, the rupiah should increase significantly, it will not weaken again, the important thing is that we see a positive impact on the community," he added.

Furthermore, Purbaya hopes that the stability of the rupiah exchange rate can reduce pressure on household spending.

"We will see the rupiah more stable, so traders know that tempe and housewives can also feel better prices," he added.
