JAKARTA - The rupiah exchange rate again weakened against the US dollar (USD) in Thursday, June 4 trading.
Based on Bloomberg data as of 09.45 WIB, the rupiah was at the level of Rp18,029 per US dollar, weakening 62.50 points or 0.35 percent compared to the previous trading.
For comparison, at the close of trading on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, the spot rupiah exchange rate was recorded as weakening 0.71 percent to Rp17,967 per US dollar. Meanwhile, the Jakarta Interbank Spot Dollar Rate (JISDOR) reference rate published by Bank Indonesia also fell 0.31 percent to the level of Rp17,931 per US dollar.
This weakening is bringing the rupiah closer to a new psychological level and becoming one of the weakest positions in its trading history against the US dollar, as an illustration, after the inauguration of President Prabowo Subianto on Monday, October 21, 2024, the rupiah is still in the range of Rp. 15,503 per US dollar. This means that compared to that level, the rupiah exchange rate has now depreciated by more than Rp. 2,500 per US dollar.
Doo Financial Futures analyst Lukman Leong assessed that the rupiah still has the potential to continue to weaken as the US dollar strengthens, driven by increased geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
In addition, he said that US employment data through ADP Employment Change and the ISM Services Index which were better than expectations also provided support for the Uncle Sam's currency.
"The rupiah is expected to weaken against the US dollar which strengthened amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Stronger-than-expected US ADP and ISM Services employment data also support the US dollar," he told VOI, Thursday, June 4.
He added that from within the country, market sentiment was still not strong enough to support the rupiah.
According to him, with this weakening, Bank Indonesia will carry out more aggressive interventions to maintain exchange rate stability.
Lukman estimates that for today's trade, the rupiah will move in the range of Rp17,900 to Rp18,050 per US dollar.
