JAKARTA - The incident of simultaneous power outages or blackouts that hit most of Sumatra has become the focus of the government.

Danantara's Chief Operating Officer (COO), Dony Oskaria, ensured that PT PLN (Persero) would undergo a thorough evaluation after the power system disruption.

According to Dony, the evaluation was carried out to review the PLN operational process as well as to investigate the causes of the blackout that occurred on Friday, May 22, 2026.

"PLN will review the entire process. Later we will review the process," said Dony at Wisma Danantara, written Tuesday, May 26.

The head of the State-Owned Enterprises Regulatory Agency (BP) also admitted that his party was still collecting information related to the cause of the mass blackout.

However, he emphasized that the mitigation aspect was the main focus so that similar incidents did not recur.

"Including the cause. Then anticipate in the future. The most important thing is mitigation in the future, so that this does not happen again," he said.

For information, the blackout in Sumatra is known to have started on Friday, May 22, 2026 at 18.44 WIB and has an impact on nine provinces, namely Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau, Jambi, Bengkulu, South Sumatra, and Lampung.

The average blackout lasts six to 10 hours per day.

A number of areas were more severely affected, including Medan City which was recorded to have experienced a blackout of up to 19 hours.

However, PT PLN (Persero) only stated that all electricity supplies from 176 main substations in Sumatra had recovered on Sunday, May 24, 2026 at 06.00 WIB.

The disruption started from the 275 kV transmission system of Muara Bungo-Sungai Rumbai in Bungo Regency, Jambi.

Extreme weather is suspected to have triggered the transmission from the interconnection network so that the North and Central Sumatra systems are separated and trigger a chain blackout.
