JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works (PU) is trying to increase access to clean water to support the stunting prevention program or growth disorders in toddlers, especially in eastern Indonesia.
One of the infrastructure support prepared was carried out through the rehabilitation and optimization of the Pungka Water Treatment Plant (IPA) to support the Semongkat Drinking Water Supply System (SPAM) in Sumbawa Regency, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Province.
Minister PU Dody Hanggodo said that the provision of clean water is one of the government's priorities in supporting the improvement of people's quality of life.
"Water is a limited resource, we must use it efficiently so that it remains available for future generations. Don't let our grandchildren have trouble with water because we are wasteful today," said Dody as quoted from a written statement, Wednesday, May 20.
The rehabilitation and optimization of Pungka IPA is carried out to increase access to safe and sustainable drinking water for the people of Sumbawa Island, especially in the districts of Sumbawa, Labuhan Badas, Unter Iwes, Moyo Utara and Moyo Hilir.
The optimization of SPAM Semongkat is considered important to strengthen the institutional capacity of the Batulanteh Water Company, Sumbawa Regency, which is currently unable to reach all areas due to limited water supply.
The presence of this infrastructure is expected to reduce the community's dependence on water sources that have not met eligibility standards.
In addition, this work also supports the achievement of the national target for access to safe drinking water and Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 on clean water and sanitation.
The scope of work for optimizing SPAM Semongkat includes rehabilitation and optimization of IPA Pungka with a capacity of 150 liters per second, repair of the reservoir and internal piping network, construction of IPA supporting facilities, improvement of mechanical and electrical systems, revitalization of the main distribution network (JDU) to the construction of the pipe crossing structure.
SPAM Semongkat utilizes raw water sources from the Semongkat River with a capacity of 165 liters per second.
Raw water is supplied through a gravity transmission system along 5 kilometers with a 16-inch pipe diameter and 11 kilometers with a 14-inch pipe diameter to IPA Pungka.
Then, the raw water will undergo a processing process to ensure its quality meets drinking water standards.
After being processed, clean water is stored in three distribution reservoir units, each with a capacity of 500 cubic meters for two units and 600 cubic meters for one unit before being distributed to the main distribution network.
From the network, water will be distributed to the House Connection (SR) in the service area.
The system is designed to serve 29 villages in five sub-districts with a total of 12,510 existing SR.
Through the optimization of the Pungka IPA, the PU Ministry hopes that the distribution of drinking water will be more reliable, the water pressure will be more stable and the service coverage will continue to expand as the needs of the community on Sumbawa Island grow.
