JAKARTA - PT Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP) together with PT Weda Bay Nickel (WBN) started the construction of the Water Treatment Plant (WTP) Lelilef to provide access to clean water for the community in Lelilef Sawai Village and Lelilef Waibulan Village, Central Halmahera, North Maluku.

The construction of this WTP is expected to answer the basic needs of the community for clean and clean water, support daily activities, and improve the quality of life sustainably. This program is also in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially point 6 on clean water and decent sanitation and point 3 on healthy and prosperous life.

The construction of the Lelilef Water Treatment Facility (IPA) or WTP was marked by the start of the installation of the distribution pipe network on Thursday, April 23, 2026. This WTP facility is equipped with two reservoirs with a total capacity of 5,200 cubic meters per day, as well as three IPA units on each reservoir with a capacity of 210 cubic meters per unit.

General Manager of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) of IWIP, Iwan Kurniawan, said that access to clean water is a basic need that has an impact on people's lives.

"The start of this clean water pipe installation work is the starting point for a change in quality of life. Access to clean water is often considered simple, but has a major impact on people's health, economy, and education," said Iwan, quoted Wednesday, May 6.

Iwan added that the success of this program is not only determined by the construction of infrastructure, but also by the active role of the community in maintaining and managing the Lelilef WTP.

"This program does not belong to IWIP, WBN or the government, but belongs to the community. Therefore, it is important for all of us to maintain the network that has been built, use water wisely, and manage its use fairly at the village level," he added.

The Head of Weda Tengah Sub-district, Antonius, said that the construction of this clean water network is a great hope for the community, which has been facing limited access to clean water. He invited all parties to support the smooth implementation of the project.

"Clean water is a common need and is in the interest of the wider community. Therefore, we appeal to the entire community to support the development process, maintain the atmosphere, and ensure that this program can run well until it is completed," he said.

Meanwhile, the Head of Lelilef Village, Faisal Djamil, emphasized the importance of maintaining the sustainability of the clean water program as a common asset of the community. "This clean water must be maintained as a long-term asset, not only for today, but also for future generations. A joint commitment is needed so that the Lelilef WTP that has been built can continue to function and provide benefits sustainably," he said.

As part of the series of inauguration of the construction of the Lelilef WTP, IWIP, Weda Bay Nickel (WBN), and representatives of the Sawai Village Government and Waibulan Village signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) as the basis for collaboration in the management and sustainability of the clean water installation, which was then followed by the symbolization of the first pipe laying as a sign of the start of the clean water network work in the area, and was attended by IWIP Director Kevin He along with the management, local government, and community representatives.

Through the provision of clean water access, IWIP and WBN hope to provide benefits in various aspects of people's lives, ranging from improving health, economic productivity, to environmental quality and education, as well as continuing to present sustainable programs that provide direct benefits to the community around the company's operational area.
