JAKARTA - The proliferation of the coffee and hospitality industries in the country has opened a new economic niche for the younger generation. Capturing this opportunity, the PTPN III Plantation Holding (Persero) through the PTPN IV PalmCo entity is partnering with the Pekanbaru Hospitality Institute to hold barista competence training for 50 young people from Sumatra.
This empowerment program aims to equip young people with practical skills so that they have the competitiveness to enter the workforce or start their own businesses in their respective areas.
PTPN IV PalmCo President Director Jatmiko K. Santosa said that this empowerment initiative was designed not only to increase individual capacity, but also to trigger a multiplier effect in the community.
"We hope that this training does not stop at improving the skills of one person. When these young people are able to be self-sufficient and open their own coffee shop business, that's where the multiplier effect occurs, starting from the absorption of new labor in the surrounding area, moving the wheels of the economy of other sectors, to empowering the local supply chain. This is in line with the company's commitment to continue to grow together with the community," said Jatmiko in his statement, Friday, April 24.
From a technical perspective, the selection of fields of expertise is based on the current labor absorption prospects. Region Head of PTPN IV Regional III, Bambang Budi Santoso, explained that the lifestyle and service industries promised a wide range of career opportunities.
"Today we want to encourage the birth of a young generation who are independent, skilled, and have competitiveness. The coffee and hospitality industries are currently growing very rapidly and opening up great opportunities for young people to have careers and entrepreneurship," said Pria, a graduate of Riau University.
This initiative to increase human resources capacity has received a positive response from the local government. Head of Training and Placement of Manpower of the Riau Manpower and Transmigration Service (Disnakertrans), Bambang Rusdianto, said the synergy between corporations and training institutions is in line with the government's agenda in improving the quality of the workforce.
"Programs like this are very important because they provide practical skills that are needed by the workforce. We hope that participants can make the most of this training so that they can compete and even create new jobs," said Bambang.
In its implementation, the training curriculum is designed so that participants understand the industry standards thoroughly. The Chairperson of the Pekanbaru Hospitality Institute, Imelda Samsi, emphasized that training emphasized the mastery of real competencies.
"We not only teach basic techniques, but also service standards, work ethics, to a thorough understanding of the hospitality industry. Hopefully, participants are ready to enter the workforce or open their own businesses," explained Imelda.
This opportunity was enthusiastically welcomed by the participants. Yuni, a young man from Indragiri Hulu, expressed his hopes after participating in this program. "This is a very good opportunity for us. I want to study seriously so that I can work as a barista or open my own coffee business in the village," he said.
For information, the implementation of self-reliance skills training is one form of PTPN IV PalmCo's social responsibility in Sumatra. On an ongoing basis, the company also accompanies several other empowerment programs, such as training blacksmith groups in Kampar who are now suppliers of plantation mechanization equipment, groups of women processing palm oil derivatives, to the development of the livestock sector and fish farming.
