JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works (PU) has completed emergency handling of 27 sanitation and sanitation infrastructure affected by disasters in the Sumatra region to prevent environmental health risks and accelerate the recovery of basic community services.
Minister PU Dody Hanggodo emphasized that the recovery of sanitation infrastructure is an important part of post-disaster handling.
"Proper sanitation is a basic need of the community. Therefore, the handling of the Final Treatment Plant (TPA) and the Tinja Sludge Treatment Plant (IPLT) must be done quickly, gradually, and sustainably so as not to pose a health risk later," said Dody in his statement in Jakarta, Sunday, as quoted by Antara.
The handling includes 15 Final Processing Sites (TPA) and 12 Tinja Sludge Processing Facilities (IPLT) which previously experienced operational disruptions due to post-disaster material accumulation. All facilities are now back in operation at the emergency handling stage.
In this phase, the handling is focused on cleaning the remaining volume of waste and materials that hinder access and have the potential to cause environmental health problems. This effort is carried out intensively to ensure that sanitation services can resume and not have a subsequent impact on the environment and public health.
The distribution of infrastructure handled includes Aceh Province with 10 IPLT and 11 landfills, North Sumatra with 2 IPLT and 3 landfills, and West Sumatra with 1 landfill.
In addition, the PU Ministry also carried out a number of technical works to support the sustainability of operations, including ordering geotextiles for strengthening sellandfill, repairing access roads to the landfill, and rehabilitating the processing unit at IPLT.
This activity is also carried out through a labor-intensive scheme involving local people, so that it not only accelerates the recovery of infrastructure but also provides direct economic impact for affected residents.
Entering the rehabilitation and reconstruction phase, the PU Ministry is carrying out permanent handling as well as improving the quality of sanitation infrastructure with a target of completion in October 2028. This is aimed at improving the management of domestic waste and wastewater systems to operate better and more sustainably.
This effort is part of the government's commitment to maintaining environmental quality, protecting public health, and ensuring basic services continue to run after disasters.
As part of future development, the PU Ministry also proposes the application of environmentally friendly sanitation technology through the procurement of Net-Zero Toilet 5.0 to improve the quality of more modern and sustainable sanitation services.
The Ministry of PU emphasized that the construction of sanitation and waste management infrastructure is not only a physical investment, but also a long-term social and environmental investment to improve the quality of life of the community.
