JAKARTA - Amid the escalating conflict in the Middle East, the Indonesian government together with Japan and the Asian Zero Emission Community (AZEC) partner countries took a proactive step by holding an AZEC Plus Online Summit Meeting.
The online meeting, which was directly led by the Japanese Prime Minister, Takaichi Sanae, was very strategic because it involved a wider coverage.
In addition to the core partner countries, Japan also invited Bangladesh, Timor-Leste, India, South Korea, and Sri Lanka, as well as international institutions such as the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
In response to the ongoing energy crisis, this meeting launched a "assistance package plan". This initiative is designed to agree on strategic measures in various aspects, ranging from short-term emergency mitigation to secure crude oil and energy product supplies, to strengthening the regional energy resilience structure in the medium and long term through the transformation of AZEC into AZEC 2.0 and the launch of a financing package of 1.5 trillion yen.
Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto, who was present on behalf of President Prabowo Subianto, expressed his appreciation for Japan's quick response in holding this meeting amid increasing uncertainty in global energy supply.
On this occasion, Airlangga emphasized that cooperation in AZEC must continue to be based on the principle of "One Goal, Various Pathways" to capture the unique economic advantages in each country.
He also conveyed Indonesia's concrete steps in mitigating the situation in the Persian Gulf, especially the Strait of Hormuz, namely the plan to implement the B50 biodiesel program in mid-2026 and the completion of the 100GW Rooftop PLTS roadmap this year as a key pillar for increasing national energy resilience.
Furthermore, Airlangga conveyed that Indonesia emphasized that cooperation through the AZEC platform is now becoming increasingly crucial.
According to him, this spirit of collaboration has actually been strengthened at the 3rd AZEC Summit in Kuala Lumpur on October 26, 2025, where Indonesia and Japan agreed on 21 new cooperation MoUs in the energy and sustainable development sectors.
"The agreement includes renewable energy, decarbonization, and strengthening the supply chain involving various institutions and companies of both countries," he said in a statement, quoted Thursday, April 16.
Until now, AZEC continues to prove its role as an inclusive and adaptive platform in supporting energy transition that is in accordance with the characteristics of member countries.
On the other hand, Indonesia itself continues to encourage real collaboration to strengthen financing and project impact.
One of the proofs of its success is reflected in the AZEC Expert Group Meeting forum which has successfully debottlenecked strategic projects such as the Muara Laboh PLTP and the Legok Nangka PLTSa.
Airlangga conveyed that the successful completion of the signing of the PJBL PLTSa Legok nangka was proof of the next success in the implementation of AZEC to encourage decarbonization in Indonesia.
