JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works (PU) is prioritizing the construction of the Cibeet and Cijurey Dams.
Minister PU Dody Hanggodo said that the two dams serve to control floods, especially in the Karawang and Bekasi areas.
Dody targets that both dam projects can be completed gradually in the coming years.
"I, well, hope it can be completed at least in 2027-2028," said Dody at a press conference at his office, Friday, April 10.
According to him, the acceleration of the construction of the dam is important, considering that the risk of flooding still threatens the area if the project is not immediately completed.
"With my own eyes I see that if it is not immediately resolved, I am afraid that Karawang and Bekasi will flood again," he said.
Unlike the dam project which will be a priority, the continuation of the Gedebage-Tasikmalaya-Cilacap Toll Road (Getaci) project which is touted to be the longest toll road in Indonesia has not shown significant progress.
The project is known to have been delayed since the early 2020s and has yet to attract investors to auction.
The Democratic Party politician revealed that the lack of interest in the project was generally due to the low projection of vehicle traffic.
He explained that in the toll road infrastructure project, the traffic level is the main factor that determines investor interest.
If the traffic is considered low, the government usually needs to provide funding support or chips in so that the project remains financially attractive.
"Usually if one project that we offer is not much of an interest, yes, because the traffic is less," he said.
However, he added, the current fiscal constraints of the government make room for providing such support limited. As a result, the government must reconsider the priority of the projects to be promoted.
He assessed that the government is now faced with a choice between continuing support for the Getaci Toll project or accelerating the construction of other infrastructure that is considered more urgent.
"Is it better for us to chip in at Getaci or accelerate the construction of Cibeet and Cijurey so that Karawang and Bekasi will not flood again in the future," concluded Dody.
