JAKARTA - The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) targets that the integrated shrimp pond area in Waingapu, East Sumba Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), is able to produce up to 52,000 tons of shrimp per year.

The project is one of the government's mainstays to increase national production while strengthening the export of fishery commodities.

Director General of Fisheries and Aquaculture of the KKP TB Haeru Rahayu said that the production projection was based on the implementation of the best cultivation standards in the pond area.

"So, if we count it in a year, it can be around 52,000 tons of shrimp that can be produced from Waingapu," said the man who is familiarly called Tebe in a press conference at the KKP office, Jakarta, Wednesday, April 1.

To achieve this target, the Ministry of Agriculture adopts a cultivation method with a productivity of around 40 tons per hectare per year.

"The best practice is about 40 tons per hectare per year. Hopefully we can achieve this," he said.

Shrimp production from the Waingapu area will later be directed to meet both export markets and domestic needs.

"If we look at exports, it is definitely a lot of products, one of which is to the US, then to China, then to countries that really need shrimp," he explained.

"And it is not impossible for domestic consumption to be fulfilled," he explained.

As for investment, the integrated shrimp pond project has a quite fantastic value, reaching IDR 7.2 trillion.

The area was built on land with a potential of up to 2,150 hectares (ha), with an area of about 1,361 ha.

In addition to the cultivation area, the area will also be equipped with various supporting facilities, such as intake channels, tanks, waste treatment facilities (IPAL) to supporting industrial areas.

"We are indeed planning this not just for a month, because the number of ponds to be built is quite a lot. We hope that in the next two years we can finish it. Next year, Insyallah, there are already some that we can operationalize," he concluded.
