JAKARTA - President Prabowo Subianto has given approval to the amount of exit duty (BK) for coal commodities. This was conveyed by Minister of Finance Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, with the final decision to be determined through a cross-ministerial meeting.
"The president (Prabowo Subianto) has agreed to a certain number, so there is no problem," he said in a media briefing, quoted on Thursday, March 26.
Furthermore, he explained that technical discussions were still needed before the policy was officially announced and the meeting would be a forum to mature the details of the policy to be implemented.
"The figure has been decided by the President, but the meeting can discuss it first, then we can issue what it will be like. (Coal) will definitely be subject to an exit tax in accordance with the President's instructions. It's not me who decides, "he said.
However, Purbaya has not revealed the amount of BK in detail, considering that the technical aspects of the policy are still in the stage of refinement.
Previously, the government had proposed a tiered tariff scheme, namely 5 percent, 8 percent, up to 11 percent, which is adjusted to the movement of coal prices.
If there are no obstacles in the discussion, this policy is targeted to take effect on April 1, 2026.
"It should be tomorrow, yes April 1. If tomorrow it will be. I don't know, it's still being tightened first what the tax level is like. What is certain is still a big number," he said.
He also opened the possibility of accelerating the implementation of policies, especially if the coal price continues to rise, because when high prices can be used to increase state revenues.
"We will see what the condition of the industry is like, but if it is a little more expensive, it can be faster. That is, if the price continues to be high, we can share (immediately implement BK) to increase our income," he said.
On the other hand, he admitted that the plan to implement BK had been rejected by the mining industry, but the government would still continue the policy because the current coal price was still high, namely above 135 US dollars per ton.
"They (coal entrepreneurs) must not agree. But now the price of coal is very high, 135 US dollars per ton more," he said.
