JAKARTA - Deputy Chairman of Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Ahmad Sahroni, asked the Financial Services Authority (OJK) together with law enforcement agencies to take firm action against debt collection practices that use violence following the stabbing case of a lawyer allegedly committed by a debt collector in Kelapa Dua, Tangerang.

South Tangerang Metro Police Chief AKBP Boy Jumalolo said the police had identified three perpetrators related to the incident.

Of that number, one perpetrator has been detained while the other two are still being sought.

Sahroni assessed that the practice of debt collection with intimidation and violence is a form of gangsterism that has the potential to disrupt public safety.

"The practice of debt collection with violence cannot be tolerated. The apparatus must arrest all perpetrators and take firm action," he said in a written statement, Thursday, February 5.

In addition to law enforcement, Sahroni also encouraged the Financial Services Authority to evaluate financing companies that use third-party collection services.

According to him, regulators need to ensure that the billing process is carried out in accordance with the applicable provisions in the financing industry sector.

"The National Police and OJK need to evaluate financing companies that use collection services with elements of gangsterism. If proven to be in violation, strict sanctions up to freezing permits need to be considered," said Sahroni.

He added that the arrangement of debt collection practices is important to maintain legal certainty and increase protection for the public as consumers of financing services.
