JAKARTA - The Ministry of Trade (Kemendag) has ensured that the supply of imported garlic will soon enter the domestic market to suppress the prices that continue to rise ahead of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr.
Director General of Domestic Trade of the Ministry of Trade Iqbal Shoffan Shofwan said the government had issued all import approvals (PI) for garlic for business actors registered in the Indonesia National Single Window (INSW) system.
"This week should have landed the garlic in Tanjung Priok, late January or early February. If the goods are already there, automatically the price will go down and return to the reference price," said Iqbal in Jakarta, Antara, Thursday, January 29.
Iqbal said, based on the results of coordination meetings between ministries and agencies, garlic was one of the commodities that needed special attention. However, after the PI was issued, he assessed that the supply problem had been resolved.
"According to the timeline that was delivered, at the end of January or early February garlic has entered. So actually there is nothing to worry about," he said.
Previously, the Central Statistics Agency recorded that the national price of garlic continued to rise to reach Rp39,810 per kilogram in the fourth week of January.
BPS Head Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti said the average price of garlic had exceeded the Consumer Sales Reference Price which was set at Rp38,000 per kilogram.
"There is indeed a trend of rising prices nationwide. In December, the price of garlic was Rp. 39,030 per kilogram, and by the fourth week of January it rose to Rp. 39,810 per kilogram," said Amalia in Jakarta, Sunday, January 25.
Amalia explained that the increase in the price of garlic has occurred since December and is most felt in a number of areas such as Natuna Regency, South Halmahera, East Flores, Rote Ndao, Central Lombok, and a number of other areas.
Nationally, the increase in the price of garlic occurred in 57.78 percent of Indonesia's regions or in 208 regencies/cities. In fact, the highest price recorded reached Rp. 100,000 per kilogram in Puncak Jaya Regency, Intan Jaya Regency, and Pegunungan Bintang Regency.
