JAKARTA - The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has highlighted the increase in sea water temperature. KKP data shows that sea temperatures have increased fourfold compared to 1985.

This condition is believed to threaten the sustainability of marine life.

Marine and Fisheries Minister's Expert Staff for Ecology and Marine Resources Hendra Yusran Siry said that even a small temperature increase has a major impact on the marine ecosystem.

"For example, some species that are very intolerant of temperature may be male or female dominant. For example, in turtles," said Hendra in a press conference at the KKP office, Jakarta, Wednesday, January 28.

Hendra said the issue of rising sea temperatures was discussed in the Blue Davos initiative.

The forum took place at the World Economic Forum or WEF in Davos, Switzerland, last week.

Rising sea temperatures also risk triggering floods. The impact can be felt by up to 1.8 billion people worldwide.

Other data show that 75 percent of the global population lives in countries with worsening freshwater crises.

Damage to aquatic ecosystems triggers economic losses of up to 58 trillion US dollars.

"But, the investment is only around two to three percent. So, this must be more focused on water," he said.

The issue of governance and access to fresh water was also highlighted during the meeting.

Hendra assessed that the discussion in the future would lead to funding schemes and partnerships.

"Then also innovation in water security," he said.

Another topic concerns blue food. The concept emphasizes the protection of the sea so that protein sources are maintained and sustainable.

The Davos Forum also raised the issue of marine protection and the blue economy.

Both issues are major agenda for global discussion.

KKP hopes that future investments will enter the blue economy sector. The direction of investment is expected to support acceleration without relying on excessive exploitation.

"It is not done with excessive regulation efforts, but also emphasizes balance," he explained.

Meanwhile, the Head of the KKP Multilateral Cooperation Team, Desri Yanti, who was also present at the Davos Forum, said that the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KP) Sakti Wahyu Trenggono had signed a letter of intent (LoI) with the WEF.

He said, WEF is known as a global think tank. The institution routinely holds various international forums.

The cooperation is expected to boost the Ocean Impact Summit (OIS) in June 2026 in Bali.

"Of course we collaborate and use the networking owned by the World Economic Forum to get direct access to investors and global business actors," he explained.
