JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works (PU) said that the Krueng Meureudu River in Pidie Jaya Regency, Aceh Province, has now opened a total of 5.7 kilometers (km) after the late November 2025 Sumatra flood.

The open river channel starts from the Meureudu-Batas Pidie Jaya National Road Bridge to the estuary (kuala).

This was confirmed after the Regional River Office (BWS) of Sumatra I, the Water Resources Directorate General of the Ministry of PU, gradually carried out the cleaning of wood and the widening of the Krueng Meureudu River in Pidie Jaya Regency.

Minister PU Dody Hanggodo said that the handling was carried out by reducing sedimentation, increasing the capacity of river flow and protecting road and bridge infrastructure around it, especially in areas prone to hydrometeorological disasters.

"With this condition, the river is able to drain the water discharge until the five-year anniversary, so that the fishing boats that were previously held back due to the siltation of flood material are now able to come out of the mooring and go back to the sea to make a living," Dody said in a written statement, Thursday, January 8.

According to Dody, emergency handling is focused on sediment cleaning, removal of wood materials, normalization and repair of river channels at critical points. So that the flow of water flows smoothly and the community can safely carry out activities.

Dody emphasized that his party would continue to monitor the condition of the river and other supporting infrastructure and be ready to take further steps for long-term handling.

"With the recovery of the function of the Krueng Meureudu River, it is hoped that the economic activities of the coastal community of Pidie Jaya can gradually return to normal and strengthen the resilience of the region against similar disaster risks," he added.
