JAKARTA - The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) is implementing a structured industrial internship practice or structured internship adapted from the Swiss vocational education system to strengthen the quality of human resources (HR) of the national industry.
The scheme is part of the Ministry of Industry's strategy in preparing industrial labor that is in line with business needs.
The strengthening of structured internships aims to respond to the challenges of changing competencies in the industrial sector, including the demands of digital transformation. Through a dual system approach, the learning process takes place in educational units and in companies, with the assistance of competent workplace trainers.
Minister of Industry (Menperin) Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita assessed that vocational education plays a key role in producing ready-to-use industrial workers and globally competitive.
"Vocational education is the backbone of the creation of competent and adaptive industrial human resources. Structured industrial work practices strengthen the suitability of graduates' competencies with industry needs," said Agus in an official statement in Jakarta, Tuesday, January 6.
The implementation of structured internships is also encouraged through international cooperation. The Ministry of Industry cooperates with the Swiss Skills for Competitiveness (SS4C) program funded by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) to build a dual system of vocational education and training in Indonesia.
The Head of the Industrial Human Resources Development Agency (BPSDMI) of the Ministry of Industry, Doddy Rahadi, said that the initial implementation had begun through the prediskusi Structured Internship activity with SS4C.
"We have mapped the readiness and practices that have been running in the vocational education units of the Ministry of Industry as the basis for strengthening implementation," he said.
SS4C support targets selected polytechnics and community academies, especially in the metal, manufacturing, food, furniture and wood industries. The cooperation involves relevant ministries and industry partners to ensure that the curriculum is connected to the real needs of the labor market.
As a reinforcement of the policy, in 2024, the Ministry of Industry and SS4C will publish a Structured Industrial Work Practice Guide. The document details the implementation procedures from the preparation, planning, implementation to completion stages, including the division of roles and responsibilities of the parties.
Currently, the Ministry of Industry also oversees 11 polytechnics, two community academies and nine vocational schools in various regions. BPSDMI data as of September 2025 notes that nine out of ten graduates of the Ministry of Industry's polytechnics and community academies in 2024 are absorbed in the workforce. Meanwhile, more than three-quarters of the graduates of the vocational schools directly enter the industry.
This achievement shows that structured internships are beginning to have a real impact on the readiness of human resources for the national industry.
