JAKARTA - The rupiah exchange rate on Tuesday, January 6, 2026 is expected to strengthen against the US dollar.

Meanwhile, the Jakarta Interbank Spot Dollar Rate (Jisdor) exchange rate of the Bank Indonesia (BI) closed down 0.13 percent to the price level of Rp16,748 per US dollar.
Doo Financial Futures analyst Lukman Leong said the rupiah has the potential to strengthen against the US dollar which has been corrected after the release of weaker than expected manufacturing data.
"The rupiah has the potential to strengthen against the US dollar which has been corrected after weaker than expected manufacturing data," he told VOI, Tuesday, January 6.
He added that the strengthening is expected to be limited because Indonesia's disappointing trade data released yesterday is still a depressing factor.
"However, the strengthening will be limited, in terms of data, Indonesia's trade disappointing that was released on Monday is still weighing," he explained.
Lukman estimates that the movement of the rupiah on Tuesday, January 6, 2026 will be in the range of Rp16,700-Rp16,800 per US dollar.
Meanwhile, money market observer Ibrahim Assuaibi assessed that the current movement of the rupiah is more influenced by external factors, especially the increasing global geopolitical tensions and the direction of US policy.
He highlighted Washington's tough move against Venezuela, after the US government confirmed the detention of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in a military operation in Caracas where Maduro was then taken to the United States to face various criminal charges.
"This operation is the most significant direct intervention by the US in Venezuela in decades and has triggered condemnation from a number of countries," he said.
He added that US President Donald Trump declared Maduro's arrest a firm action against a regime he considered criminal, while reaffirming the US commitment to overseeing a safe and orderly transition of government in Venezuela.
In addition, Ibrahim added that Trump also threatened countries that were considered to be in conflict with US policies, such as Colombia and Iran, and reiterated the discourse of taking over Greenland.
According to him, a series of statements and steps have increased global geopolitical uncertainty and this condition can encourage the strengthening of the US dollar as a safe asset, as well as putting pressure on the currencies of emerging countries, including the rupiah.
Ibrahim estimates that the rupiah will move fluctuatio but within the price range of Rp16,740 - Rp16,770 per US dollar.
