JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works (PU) said that at least 1,709 heavy equipment had been mobilized to handle disasters on the island of Sumatra.
"Until Sunday, January 4, 2026 at 20.00 WIB, the PU Ministry added 39 units of heavy equipment from the support of BUMN Karya, so that the total number of heavy equipment that has been mobilized is 1,709 units or increased from the previous 1,670 units," said PU Minister Dody Hanggodo in a written statement, Monday, January 5.
The addition of heavy equipment is focused on accelerating emergency handling, cleaning landslide material, restoring road access, and supporting logistics distribution in the Aceh, North Sumatra (North Sumatra) and West Sumatra (West Sumatra) regions.
In Aceh Province, additional heavy equipment includes 13 units of excavators, one unit of backhoe loaders, four units of wheel loaders and five units of dump trucks, which are placed in the affected areas, including in Gayo Lues Regency, Pidie Jaya and Aceh Tamiang.
Meanwhile, in North Sumatra Province, 15 units of excavators, one unit of backhoe loader, one unit of wheel loader, two units of dump trucks, one unit of bulldozer and one unit of pickup were added to support handling, including on the Tarutung-Sibolga section.
Meanwhile, in West Sumatra Province, adjustments were made to field needs with the reduction of six units of excavators and the addition of one unit of mini excavator which was focused on Tanjung Raya District, Agam Regency.
In addition to heavy equipment, the PU Ministry also strengthened emergency infrastructure support through the addition of bailey bridges. Currently, the bailey bridges that have been alerted are 16 units spread across Aceh from 11 units to 14 units.
In North Sumatra, there are two bailey bridges that are adjusted to field needs. Meanwhile, in West Sumatra there are no bailey bridges that are installed because all emergency bridges have been pulled as access recovers.
According to Dody, his party continues to move quickly by deploying all resources to support disaster management on the island of Sumatra, especially in the road and bridge sectors, water resources, and the provision of clean water and sanitation.
"We are moving quickly to ensure that connectivity is maintained and the basic needs of people in the evacuation location are met," he said.
Dody also ensured that all resources mobilized would continue to be optimized to accelerate the recovery of infrastructure, reopen regional connectivity, and ensure the safety and comfort of the people in the affected areas of the Sumatran Island.
