Rupiah has the potential to consolidate in the midst of investors' wait-and-see attitude

JAKARTA - The rupiah exchange rate in Monday, December 15 trading is expected to strengthen limited against the US dollar.

Citing data from Bloomberg, Friday, December 12, 2025, the spot rupiah exchange rate closed up 0.18 percent to Rp16,646 per US dollar.

Meanwhile, the Jakarta Interbank Spot Dollar Rate (Jisdor) exchange rate of the Bank Indonesia (BI) closed up 0.09 percent to a price level of Rp16,652 per US dollar.

Doo Financial Futures analyst Lukman Leong assessed that the rupiah tends to move consolidated or relatively flat with limited opportunities for strengthening against the US dollar.

According to him, this is in line with investors who are still holding back (wait and see) ahead of the release of a number of important economic data, such as the US Non-Farm Payrolls (NFP) employment report, inflation data, and the results of the Bank Indonesia Board of Governors (RDG BI) meeting this week.

"Investors tend to wait and see in anticipation of a series of important economic data that is led by US NFP and inflation data as well as RDGBI this week," he told VOI, Monday, December 15.

Meanwhile, money market observer Ibrahim Assuaibi assessed that the US dollar was also pressured by the latest labor data, based on a report from the US Department of Labor showing that initial unemployment claims in the US as of December 6 rose to 236 thousand, a significant jump from the revised figure of the previous week of 192 thousand.

Ibrahim added that in the December meeting, the Fed cut interest rates by 25 basis points through a non-unanimous decision, so that the benchmark interest rate was in the range of 3.50 to 3.75 percent, the lowest level in the last three years.

However, he explained that Fed officials indicated the potential for a further cut while continuing to monitor labor market developments and the rate of inflation, which is still relatively high.

"The market currently estimates a nearly 78 percent probability that the Fed will keep interest rates steady next month," he said in a statement, quoted on Monday, December 15.

Ibrahim predicted that the rupiah would move fluctuatio on Monday, December 15 in the price range of IDR 16,640 - IDR 16,700 per US dollar.

Meanwhile, Lukman projected the movement of the rupiah on Monday, December 15, moving in the range of Rp16,550 per US dollar to Rp16,700 per US dollar.
