JAKARTA - The construction of Tanah Abang Station Phase I has been completed. Now, the station is capable of accommodating up to 380,000 passengers per day, an increase of almost three times the previous capacity.
Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi said the station had been operating since June 2025 by serving the five main routes, namely Kampung Bandan, Rangkasbitung, Duri 'Tangerang, Manggarai' Bogor, and Cikarang.
"The passenger capacity of Tanah Abang Baru Station is all of the total from 141,000 to 380,000 passengers," said Dudy at the inauguration of Tanah Abang Station, Jakarta, Tuesday, November 4.
According to Dudy, Tanah Abang Station contributed about 22 percent of the total Jabodetabek KRL passengers.
As of October 2025, it was recorded that 63 million passengers had been transported from the station.
Overall, all rail networks in Indonesia recorded 486 million passengers throughout 2024, signaling the high public confidence in rail-based mass transportation modes.
The value of the Tanah Abang Phase I Station construction project reached Rp. 380.93 billion. The new building Tanah Abang Station stands on an area of 31,174 square meters with a building area of 19,000 square meters. The facilities cover four platforms and six lanes, which can serve a series of trains with 12 carriages.
"So if you can imagine 300, it's like two Boeing 737 aircraft. So in dispatching a series it's approximately 20 Boeing 737 aircraft," he said.
Dudy emphasized that the construction of this new station is part of the government's efforts to support the concept of transit-oriented area (TOD).
In addition to expanding capacity, continued Dudy, this development is also intended to anticipate a surge in passengers which continues to increase every year.
Tanah Abang Station is one of the highest intensity stations in Jabodetabek. This station is a center for community mobility, so it needs to be developed with the concept of transit-oriented areas," he said.
