DPR Supports The Policy Of The Minister Of Finance For Purbaya That Does Not Increase Tobacco Products Excise Tariffs In 2026

JAKARTA - Commission XI of the DPR RI supports the decision of the Minister of Finance (Menkeu) Purbaya Yudhi Sadive who does not increase the excise tariff on tobacco products (CHT) in the 2026 tabulation.

Chairman of Commission XI of the House of Representatives, Mukhamad Misbakhun, who is in charge of managing state finances, fiscal and monetary policies, to supervising the financial services sector, considered this step appropriate.

"In my opinion, Mr. Purbaya's steps not to increase the excise on tobacco products in 2026 are the right steps and need to be given support," said Misbakhun in a statement in Jakarta, quoted by Antara, Saturday, September 27.

According to him, the decision shows that the Minister of Finance Purbaya is starting to understand fundamental problems in the issue of tobacco excise. He hopes that this step will be followed up with a thorough study of excise regulations.

"Of course, after Pak Purbaya did not increase the 2026 CHT, he also began to review the entire regulatory structure regarding CHT rates," he said.

Misbakhun added that a comprehensive evaluation is important to ensure the potential for illegal practices can be suppressed, state revenues are maintained, and millions of workers who depend on the tobacco industry are protected.

Previously, Minister of Finance Purbaya ensured that tobacco excise in 2026 would not increase. The decision was taken after he met representatives of employers' associations from the tobacco industry.

"So we don't increase the excise tariff in 2026," said Purbaya in a media briefing, at his office, Friday (26/9).

Purbaya explained that the government is considering the pressure experienced by the industry, starting from reducing production to the rampant circulation of illegal cigarettes.
