JAKARTA - More than 900 vegetable farmers from various regions in Indonesia today celebrate National Farmer's Day by participating in the Agricultural Technology Degree, a joint learning event that presents modern vegetable cultivation innovations. This activity was held simultaneously in areas that became agricultural centers such as Karawang and Bandung-West Java, Magelang, Wonosobo and Sragen-Central Java, Minahasa and Pinrang-Sulawesi, as well as Alahan Panjang-West Sumatra.
This Agricultural Technology title is an important moment for vegetable farmers, who have been the backbone of a nutritious food provider for the people of Indonesia, especially in the midst of big challenges such as climate anomalies, land limitations, land quality decline, and pest attacks and plant disease.
In this activity, farmers have the opportunity to get to know modern technology firsthand which can help them to be more productive, adaptive, and prosperous. The technology introduced includes more efficient land processing including measurements of soil pH, utilization of biological fertilizers, plant care techniques, integrated pest control and disease, to the selection of superior high-quality varieties that have proven adaptive in various parts of Indonesia.
"Technological utilization is no longer an option, but a necessity. We want vegetable farmers to be able to produce higher harvests and at the same time maintain the quality of the land so that the welfare of farmers can be sustainable," said Director of R&D PT East-West Seed Indonesia (Ewindo), Fatkhu Rokhman, in his statement, Wednesday, September 24.
One of the most awaited farmers in this Technology Title is the introduction of the leading varieties of the latest vegetables that are resistant to viral attacks. As is known, vegetable farmers in recent years have been haunted by plant virus attacks that can cause crop failure and heavy losses. Some of the virus resistant varieties introduced include Terong M72 F1, Kacang Panjang GUARDA F1, Melon DAVIDINA F1, and Chili Keriting TANGGUH F1. Apart from being resistant to the virus, these varieties have the potential for large harvest and rapid harvest.
Farmers are also introduced to the NB SUPER F1 Corn, a superior variety of sweet corn which has high productivity and is adaptive in various land conditions. Interestingly, this corn also provides greater profits to farmers with other harvests, namely baby corn or abundant putren.
These advantages are believed to be able to provide added value for vegetable farmers. In addition to being more resilient in facing climate change and disease attacks, this superior variety also opens up greater economic opportunities because the harvest is in accordance with market demand. In the past, we were often worried about crop failure due to disease, now there are more resistant varieties. The results are also more selling well in the market, so we are more enthusiastic about planting," said a farmer from Karawang, West Java.
In addition to superior vegetable varieties, farmers in Bandung and Wonosobo are also introduced to the technology of planting shallots through seeds. This technology is starting to be in great demand because it provides many benefits, including more cost-effective seeds, is more free from disease attacks, and produces shallots with uniform quality tubers. For vegetable farmers, this technology is not only an innovative solution, but also an opportunity to increase national shallot productivity, which has been one of the important commodities in the daily consumption of Indonesian people.
