JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Regional Infrastructure and Development (IPK) Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) revealed that there are prospective foreign investors who are starting to be interested in investing in the giant sea wall (GSW) embankment construction project on the North Coast of Java.

AHY said the foreign investors came from China, Europe and the Middle East. However, he did not specify which European and Middle Eastern countries were interested in investing in the project.

According to him, investors' interest has been conveyed to President Prabowo Subianto. Thus, the potential investment for GSW in the future does not only come from Chinese investors.

"Lastly, I was invited to a limited meeting (Ratas) by the President there, he (President Prabowo) did convey a number of circles and we also know exactly how this issue has also received the attention of a number of countries. It can be said that there is potential for investors, including from China. Not only in Asia, but also in Europe and the Middle East," AHY said when met after attending the Green Initiative Conference (GIC) event at the Borobudur Hotel, Jakarta, Thursday, September 18.

However, AHY said, the realization of the investment could not be carried out in the near future. According to him, a gradual process is needed to finalize the concept of GSW development because it is a big project and of course requires a jumbo budget.

"We want to be progressive, but we can't grasak-grusuk. Then, in the end, it actually causes problems in the future. Well, the economic aspect, technocratics, including this social aspect, is equally important," he explained.

Later, the project will not only be for areas that are prone to tidal flooding, such as Jakarta, but throughout Pantura from Banten to East Java. In addition, there are a number of urgent locations for embankments to be built immediately, such as on the north coast of Semarang and Demak, Central Java.

"We are not only photographing Jakarta, but also all of Java. In Banten, West Java, Central Java, East Java. Indeed, there are a number of locations that are very vulnerable, for example Semarang and Demak in Central Java. This also needs attention and reinforcement that must be done immediately," he said.

Not only that, said AHY, the government will also consider designing the project not only in the form of concrete in general, but also in other forms, such as embankments or planting mangroves.

"So, at this time we are counting everything as best we can, the needs, the essentials, the approach. Then the design is also not only all concrete, meaning that not everything is then imagined from end to end it is concrete at sea. It can be in the form of a beach embankment or mangrove," explained AHY.

To note, Giant Sea Wall is a mega project that requires very large investments. No kidding, the government calculated that the project could cost up to 80 billion US dollars or around Rp. 1,298 trillion.

The construction of giant sea embankments is carried out to overcome the problem of floods that often occur in the North Coast of Java, especially in several areas whose conditions are increasingly concerning, such as the north coast of Jakarta, Semarang and Demak.

With fiscal limitations, the Indonesian government hopes that there will be investment interest from foreign investors in the giant sea embankment project.
