JAKARTA - PT PLN (Persero) continues to strengthen its role as a driving force for the national energy transition by accelerating the development of Geothermal Power Plants (PLTP).
PLN's New Renewable Director of Project and Energy Management, Suroso Isnandar, said that the mandate for PLTP development is contained in the 2025 '2034 Electric Power Supply Business Plan (RUPTL). In the document, the Government targets PLTP capacity of up to 5.2 gigawatts (GW) throughout Indonesia. PLN will ensure that all projects run optimally and provide broad benefits.
Indonesia's geothermal potential is very large and spread across many regions. We will optimize the development of PLTP that has been studied so that its presence has a real impact, both for the community around PLN projects and customers throughout Indonesia," said Suroso, Friday, August 29.
Suroso added that PLN has prepared various strategies to accelerate the development of PLTP projects in various regions, one of which is through an agreement to purchase geothermal steam with geothermal developers.
Furthermore, Suroso explained that currently PLN is preparing a number of geothermal strategic projects, including two PLTP projects in Bengkulu Province.
The two geothermal projects in Bengkulu are part of the implementation of the 2025 2034 RUPTL and are designed to strengthen the new renewable energy mix (EBT) while increasing the reliability of electricity supply," explained Suroso.
He explained that the development of the Kepahiang 110 megawatt (MW) PLTP in Kepahiang Regency and Rejang Lebong Regency, is now entering the finalization stage for the selection of strategic partners. The electricity produced will later be distributed to the Pekalongan Main Substation (GI) in Kepahiang Regency.
Meanwhile, in other Bengkulu areas, PLN is also working on PLTP Hululais 110 MW in Lebong Regency, which is targeted to operate commercially or commercial operation date (COD) in 2028.

PLTP Hululais will utilize a source of geothermal energy originating from the Geothermal Working Area (WKP) owned by PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE). The electricity produced by PLTP will be channeled to GI Pekalongan in Kepahiang Regency.
"Through the development of PLTP in various regions, PLN not only supports national energy security and the transition to green energy, but also encourages regional economic growth through the involvement of local business actors and employment," concluded Suroso.
