JAKARTA - Minister of Trade (Mendag) Budi Santoso ensured that the government temporarily stopped exporting frozen shrimp from PT Bahari Makmur Sejati Indonesia (BMS Food) to the United States (US).
This decision was taken following a report by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) which found allegations of contamination of Cesium-137 radioactive substances in frozen shrimp products from Indonesia.
"Yes, temporarily (stopped). We do an inspection first to make sure whether or not the allegations are true from America. Whether (the accusation about the findings) of Cesium C-137 is proven or not," he said at the Office of the Ministry of Trade, Jakarta, Wednesday, August 20.
Budi said he had also communicated with the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) and the Nuclear Energy Supervisory Agency (Bapetan) regarding these findings.
Furthermore, Budi said, the KKP and Bapetan are currently conducting further inspections to ensure the findings of the United States Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (FDA).
"For example, it's not (evidible), yes, we will communicate again (with the US)," he said.
Budi emphasized that the suspension of exports only applies to verified BMS Food products. Meanwhile, shrimp exports from other companies continue to run normally.
"We don't have a problem with the others, so one was found. Meanwhile, it was America that stopped the products that had entered, right, there were no problems," he said.
