Pertamina International Refinery Lifts The First Bioavtur Made From Raw Oil Denies

JAKARTA - PT Refinery Pertamina Internasional (KPI) officially carried out the first lifting/delivery of Pertamina Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) products made from a mixture of Used Cooking Oil (UCO) or crude oil.

This inaugural delivery was carried out in the framework of Pertamina SAF's flight based on crude oil which will begin in mid-August using the Pelita Air Services aircraft on the Jakarta - Denpasar route. About 32 kilo liters of Pertamina SAF from the Cilacap Refinery was prepared for the flight.

"This is an important achievement of KPI in energy transformation, as well as a strategic step in the transition to low-carbon energy in Indonesia. This Cilacap Green Refinery project is a strategic step to accelerate the energy transition to renewable energy and contribute to reducing carbon emissions by 84 percent lower than fossil aviation fuels," said KPI President Director Taufik Adityawarman, Tuesday, August 12.

He explained that the crude oil used had been thoroughly tested, then processed at the Cilacap Green Refinery at the Hydro Treated Distillate Treatment Unit (TDHT).

The production process is carried out with CO-Processing UCO technology, namely using the Red and White Catalys results which are the result of formulation and domestic production.

Pertamina SAF products have also met ASTM D1655 and DefStan 91-091 international standards. This achievement makes Pertamina SAF the first SAF products in Indonesia and Southeast Asia to be officially certified.

For the initial stage, the production capacity is targeted at 9 metric barrels with a composition of 2'3 percent UCO. Furthermore, KPI will also make deliveries using a ship of 1.7 million liters with the aim of Soekarno Hatta Airport in Jakarta.

"This inaugural delivery moment is also very important because it is carried out in our moments to celebrate the Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia. The spirit of independence is also a spirit and inspiration for us as a nation to become an independent and energy independent nation," said Taufik.

Pertamina SAF's production made from this standard is also a continuation of the KPI's success story in producing environmentally friendly aircraft fuel.

Previously, KPI had produced Pertamina SAF made from Refined, Bleached, and Deodorized Palm Kernel Oil (RBDPKO) or palm oil.

SAF berbasis RBDKO ini telah diproduksi dan digunakan pada uji terbang yang dilakukan pada tahun 2021 dan 2023.

Uji terbang pada tahun 2023 dilakukan dengan menggandeng maskapai penerbangan komersil Garuda Indonesia dengan rute Jakarta-Solo pulang pergi.

“Inovasi dan uji coba Pertamina SAF yang dilakukan KPI membuktikan bahan bakar aviasi yang ramah lingkungan dan berbahan nabati bukan lagi konsep. Kami meyakini Pertamina SAF akan menjadi solusi strategis bagi industri penerbangan yang berkelanjutan di masa depan,” ungkap Taufik.

This RBDKO-based SAF has been produced and used in flight tests conducted in 2021 and 2023.

The flight test in 2023 was carried out by cooperating with the commercial airline Garuda Indonesia on the Jakarta-Solo round-trip route.

"The innovation and trials of Pertamina SAF conducted by KPI prove that environmentally friendly and vegetable aviation fuels are no longer a concept. We believe Pertamina SAF will be a strategic solution for the sustainable aviation industry in the future," said Taufik.
