JAKARTA - Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia revealed that PT Pertamina (Persero) will work on the Ambalat Block with National Petroliam Bhd (Petronas). This decision was taken after Indonesia and Malaysia agreed to work together to work on oil and gas fields located in the border area between the two countries.
Bahlil said, at a high level discussion between the two leaders of the country, Indonesia and Malaysia, they were building a concept to manage the Ambalat block.
"The return is an area that politically feels that each of them claims to be like that. There are or there are no restrictions. So to be honest, I say that there is a potential for oil and gas resources. One of the things we discuss is how we manage this area together for the common good," Bahlil told the media crew after being a speaker at the Energy and Mineral Festival, quoted Thursday, July 31.
The two countries, he said, agreed that if the Ambalat block was not managed, the two countries would not benefit from it.
Because even if it's like this, there are reserves, but if they are not managed, both of them can't get any part even though the Block located in the Sulawesi Sea has abundant potential.
"Because even if it's like this, there are reserves, but if they are not managed, both of them don't get any part," he added.
Because it is managed by the state, Bahlil emphasized that the Ambalat Block will be managed by state-owned enterprises (BUMN) from each country, namely Pertamina and Petronas.
"Where the representation for the oil and gas sector is Petronas from Malaysia and Pertamina from Indonesia," Bahlil added.
However, Bahlil did not divulge further regarding the amount of participation rights from each country considering that it is still being studied by the two countries.
"But this is not final. This is still under study. Once again I say that this is still under study. We don't know when and how the method and method are," said Bahlil.
On the same occasion, PHE Director of Strategic Planning, Portfolio, and Commercial Affairs Edi Karyanto revealed that his party is ready if later assigned by the government to manage the Ambalat Block with Petronas.

"We are also planning for regional development in the Ambalat Block which borders Malaysia. Currently, we are also discussing further with parties in Malaysia," he said.
Edi added that currently his party is still waiting for directions from SKK Migas and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, in this case the Directorate General of Oil and Gas of Earth. However, he ensured that PHE already had competence and experience in deep-sea operations. Not only experience, Pertamina's financial side also has sufficient capital if later given orders to work on oil and gas blocks that were once regions of this dispute.
"We operators are ready if they are ordered to carry out exploration, but we are waiting (direction) completely," he said.
