JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works (PU) is preserving the national road section between Sumberjati and Banyuwangi Regency, specifically at Km 233+500, known as the Mbah Singo Bend on the Gumitir Route, Jember Regency, East Java.
With these repairs, the Gumitir Route, which connects Jember and Banyuwangi Regencies, East Java, will be completely closed for two months. The road closure will run from July 24 to September 24.
The Gumitir Route repairs are part of the Road and Bridge Preservation work package for Fiscal Year 2025 through the East Java-Bali National Road Implementation Agency (BBPJN) of the Directorate General of Highways, Ministry of Public Works.
The work includes strengthening the lower slope with 55 bored pile construction points over a length of 115 meters and improving the road geometry to improve public safety. To expedite the work, two bored pile machines have been deployed and the fabrication of reinforcing steel has been accelerated.
The closure of this route will last two months while the bore piles are installed, while the entire preservation work is estimated to take five months.
Public Works Minister Dody Hanggodo stated that the national road preservation is an effort to maintain the road's stability while improving the quality of service, safety, and comfort for the public.
He hopes that once the repairs are complete, the Gumitir Route will be safer, more comfortable, and support smooth logistics distribution.
"And the mobility of people in East Java and the surrounding areas," said Dody in an official statement, quoted on Thursday, July 31.
The closure of the strategic route connecting Jember and Banyuwangi has resulted in the diversion of traffic. It has been agreed that large-tonnage vehicles will be directed via the Pantura route, while vehicles heading to Bondowoso will be limited to a maximum of 15 tons.
Alternative access for motorcycles has been prepared for the surrounding community.
The following are alternative routes that can be used during road repairs:
1. Jember–Banyuwangi traffic (two-way)
- Two-wheeled, four-wheeled, and six-wheeled vehicles are diverted via Bondowoso–Situbondo–Banyuwangi.
- Goods vehicles with a capacity of more than 15 tons are diverted via the Pantura route (Lumajang–Probolinggo–Situbondo–Banyuwangi).
2. Traffic from Surabaya/Lumajang to Banyuwangi (two-way) is diverted via Leces–Probolinggo–Situbondo–Banyuwangi.
3. The alternative route around Alas Gumitir is not recommended for public transportation due to the narrow, unpaved, and poorly lit roads. This route is intended solely for local residents using two-wheeled vehicles.
