Cijurey Dam Designed To Support Food Self-Sufficiency

JAKARTA - Minister of Public Works (PU) Dody Hanggodo revealed that the Cijurey Dam in Bogor Regency, West Java was designed to support food self-sufficiency.

Dody emphasized that the construction of this dam is part of the government's long-term commitment to strengthening water security, supporting food security through increasing agricultural productivity, and reducing flooding.

The Cijurey Dam is designed not only to control flooding, but also to provide raw water, increase the potential for electricity, and increase agricultural productivity, which aims to support the national food self-sufficiency program launched by President Prabowo Subianto," he said, quoting Antara.

The Ministry of Public Works continues to accelerate the construction of the Cijurey Dam located in Cariu District, Sukamakmur District and Tanjungsari District, Bogor Regency, West Java Province.

By the end of June 2025, the physical progress of the Cijurey Dam construction has reached 30.30 percent, with a financial progress of 20.39 percent of the multiyear contract (MYC) plan.

With an inundation area of 56.15 hectares and a capacity of 14.37 million cubic meters, Cijurey Dam after officially operating will supply irrigation water for the Cihoe-Cikampeni Irrigation Area (DI) covering an area of 1,486 hectares and in Ciomas-Installed Bedil covering an area of 60 hectares and can increase the planting index (IP) from 180 percent to 265 percent, and potentially add a New Irrigation Area of 501 Ha.

The Cijurey Dam is also able to reduce the potential for flooding in the downstream area of the Cihoe River, by lowering the Q25 flood discharge from 291.47 m3/second to 118.53 m3/second, or about 59.33 percent. Other additional benefits include the supply of raw water of 0.71 m3/second for the Districts of Cariu and Sukamakmur, as well as the potential for microhydro power plants (PLTM) of 1 MW and PLTS of 10 MW.

The work that has been running includes the construction of main dams, defecting channels, delegating buildings, instrumentation work as well as right and left access road work. Some technical obstacles such as potential landslides and rearrangement of public facilities have been handled through intensive coordination and construction design adjustments.

Despite facing several technical obstacles, the Ministry of Public Works through the Directorate General of Water Resources ensures that the Cijurey dam construction project continues to run according to the corridors of safety, spatial planning, and environmental sustainability.

The Ministry of Public Works also continues to coordinate with local governments and the community so that social impacts can be minimized fairly and participatively.

The Ministry of Public Works ensures that all stages of development prioritize quality, accountability, and construction safety, so that the benefits of this dam can be felt widely by the community and become an important part of sustainable development in the West Java region.
